“Earlier this month the World Bank announced more than $1 billion in humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, stating the money would go to UN agencies and international NGOs while remaining outside the control of the Taliban.”
How will they make sure these funds remain outside the control of the Taliban?
Neither the World Bank nor the UN have answered or can answer that.
“Taliban welcomes UN’s continued Afghanistan presence,” AFP, March 18, 2022 (thanks to Henry):
Kabul (AFP) – The Taliban Friday welcomed a UN Security Council resolution formally extending the world body’s presence in Afghanistan, although the government of the hardline Islamist group remains unrecognised by the international community.
Thursday’s resolution — which avoids using the word “Taliban” — allows the UN to continue work in Afghanistan, still reeling after decades of war and whose economy was devastated when the international community cut off aid as the group took power last year.
The vote to extend the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) was 14 in favour, with one abstention — by Russia.
The UN has not yet recognised the Taliban’s pick of envoy to the body, and the resolution does not give the new government international recognition.
The mission includes several strands of cooperation, on humanitarian and political issues as well as on human rights, including those of women, children and journalists.
“We consider the extension of the mandate of UNAMA as a good step and want them to work effectively for solving humanitarian and other problems in Afghanistan,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP Friday.
“We will coordinate and cooperate with them.”…

The thing that I’m curious about – why did Russia abstain? When they were one of the first countries to recognize this Taliban regime?

Infidel, I have heard that in the wake of UN condemnation of Russia for invading Ukraine that Russia is simply abstaining from votes on anything there. I don’t know if this is the case, but it seems likely.

UN votes to keep on aiding the Taliban in Afghanistan
…………..
Insanity. Unsurprising, though.
OLD GUY says
Where does the WORLD BANK get this Billion dollars from?
Aiding the Taliban, what a great idea. I would have never thought of that as a way to convert them to moderate islam. Just how many BILLION will it take to convert them all?
Do the leadership of the UN actually believe that this BILLION dollars will be used for humanitarian aide? Or will it simply pad pockets and purchase more bullets? Weapon sales will rise.
