As a longtime citizen of Canada, I never thought I’d see the day.
Democrat Rep. Latyna Humphrey “said Canada, not the state of Ohio, should be addressing those issues,” but the fact is that Canada clearly isn’t addressing the issue adequately. It is reassuring that Ohio House Republicans took note, and the resulting embarrassing publicity is good.
Democrats frequently reference the “global community” and the “global village,” so it is ironic that Humphrey would fail to see why Canada would be on a global watch list. Canada also shares a long border with the US, more than double the length of the Southern border. Canada has entered a dark phase, heading down the slippery slope of totalitarianism. It has earned a place on this watch list. When the US Commission on International Religious Freedom publishes its watch list, people take note.
When the resolution to put Canada on the watch list was introduced, it mentioned “the history of religious freedom that Canada, the United States and the state of Ohio share.” Justin Trudeau, however, has created an unprecedented shift in the country. The resolution condemned “the actions of Canadian authorities who arrested, fined and jailed clergy members during COVID crackdowns.”
It is noteworthy that after Justin Trudeau became prime minister of Canada, he shut down the Office of Religious Freedom.
“Republicans in the Ohio House vote to put Canada on a federal watch list,” The Statehouse News Bureau, June 2, 2022:
The Ohio House passed a resolution (House Resolution 194) late Wednesday night that urges the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom to add Canada to a religious freedom watch list.
Republican Rep. Tim Ginter (R-Salem) backed the resolution for the way Canada handled lockdowns of churches and actions it took against religious leaders during the pandemic.
“This resolution is not the result of a singular incident or even a handful of incidents. It’s a persistent pattern of religious rights violations that has driven us to this point,” Ginter said.
Rep Reggie Stoltzfus (R-Paris Township) said religious leaders who violated COVID protocols in Canada were jailed. And he says that’s not a behavior Ohio should condone. He said this resolution would send a strong message to Canada.
“While Ohio has stood up for religious freedom and protected the right to attend religious services, it is clear Canada has not done the same,” Stoltzfus said.
Stoltzfus said this behavior is “very similar to what we see in Communist-controlled China.”
But Democrats said it was unnecessary and even out of line for the Ohio Legislature to pass this resolution. Rep. Latyna Humphrey (D-Columbus) said questions about religious freedom are important. But she said Canada, not the state of Ohio, should be addressing those issues.
“We should be addressing the issues that our constituents are asking for such as stricter gun policies, legislation to protect women’s rights and reforming our rigged criminal justice system. At this point in time, we are focusing on issues that are not even within our jurisdiction,” Humphrey said.
Rep. Daniel Troy (D-Willowick) said Ohio has no business trying to tell Canada how to run its country.
“Before we start the War of 1812 here again with our Canadian neighbors (laughter in chamber), I just want to remind everybody that they’ve been a strong and loyal N.A.T.O. member. They are one of our strongest allies.”
Canada is also a strong trading partner with Ohio…..
PMK says
“USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan, U.S. federal government commission created by the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) that monitors the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad. USCIRF uses international standards to monitor religious freedom violations globally, and makes policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and Congress.”
This is a government commission. It is not ‘telling Canada what to do’. Most countries on the watch list are in Asia. In this hemisphere, Cuba and Nicaragua are on the special watch list (as opposed to countries of particular concern, most of which are Muslim), Canada would be the largest country in the Americas to be put on the list.
It is not ‘out of line’ for the US to take note of what is happening in Canada, given that this commission was set up by Congress to advise American leaders.

I think we also share the longest undefended border in the world.
Of course it was over 20 years ago, but I’m reminded of 9/11. US airspace was shut down and people who were already flying to the US were taken in by Canada.
gravenimage says
Yes, PMK–I still applaud Canada for allowing planes headed for the US to divert there after 9/11–and then small towns on the east coast taking it upon themselves to offer Americans and other travelers food and places to sleep, often in Canadian’s own homes. I was not one of those travelers, but am still very grateful.
Overall this has been a great relationship between the two nations. Trudeau is not helping, though.

Ohio shares a 245 km border with Canada. Naturally they should be concerned about the terrible government up there.
Wellington says
So terribly sad and tragic what has happened during the premiership of Trudeau, who is at least an ignoramus if not downright evil.
Perhaps the optimal response would be for the Conservative Party to no longer participate in federal elections. Not sure this is correct but is anything else working right now with Trudeau’s control-freak Party and the NDP now in charge?
Sometimes, after all, a boycott can be as effective, if not more effective, than trying to get along with a malicious gang. Really, is anything else working I would ask?
Will welcome posts from Canadians about this. But know full well that I think Trudeau is as huge a negative as Biden is here in America. Proceed from this starting point I should think—I do think.

I immigrated from Canada to the United States several years ago. Both Pierre Trudeau and son, Justin have been disasters for Canada as Prime ministers. English hating Pierre split Canada into an armed camp. His desire to make Quebec the seat of government instead of Ottawa and turn Canada into a primary French speaking nation failed. Paul was a confirmed communist and great friend of Fidel Castro. Justin has stated is most admired leaders are Castro and China. Who will dominate soon? It’s no longer a toss up between French and British,, it’s between Canadians and Muslims. With Muslims producing at five times the birthrate of Canadians and Canadians flocking to the United States to get away from Trudeau’s heavy hand the writing is on the wall. However, I wonder if Justin can stand up against the Muslim ‘push’?

…………….
Understandable but so depressing that this is necessary. Will this give Trudeau pause? Don’t count on it.

Trudeau and Biden, a good comparison of negativity. They’re both sucking up to islam.

Grimly true, John. For quite a few years, we almost seemed to be “trading off” on having unhinged or decent leaders–now it is the perfect storm of “woke” stupidity.

“We should be addressing the issues that our constituents are asking for such as stricter gun policies, legislation to protect women’s rights”. I guess the woman who said this doesn’t realize that “stricter gun policies” is the opposite of “legislation to protect women’s rights”. Indeed, just last week, a woman with a gun stopped an attempted mass murder of people at party that included herself.

I sent an email to the NDP member of parliament in my area asking her to speak up about the police dragging a minister down a highway in Canada. she sent me a reply that utterly shocked me – – “He should have done what he was told”. I sent her back an email telling her what our Constitution says about religious freedom- – no answer.
She also voted in favour of the emergency act that lasted just long enough to freeze the bank accounts of anyone ( the fringe) who does not support the Economic Forum’s agenda.
Is it any wonder there are long line ups at the passport offices – – I would leave if I was allowed to, but right now I am a Canadian who is not allowed to leave this “DEMOCRATIC” country.
There is a new children’s book out that is selling quite well – -until the dictator stops the sale of – – How the Prime Minister Stole Freedom.

Best wishes to you and other Canadians who feel the same, from someone south of Line Forty-Nine and the Great Lakes.
But down here, the “Democratic” Party is going hell for leather to curtail the rights spelled out in black and white print in our Constitution, supposedly to uphold unwritten rights which judges have somehow discovered in the “penumbrae” (shadows) of the Constitution. Our whole continent is in deadly peril.

E T,
As a physician, I recently participated in a Zoom conference call with the CDC a few weeks ago and very politely asked about the risk / benefit of the Covid vaccine in children.
My question was ignored / deflected…
E T says
Not surprised James, here in Ontario, the College of Physicians and Surgeons a long time ago told doctors not to make any negative remarks about the vaccines. I know several doctors and nurses who were fired for not falling in line. I know a young guy in his early forties with blood clots in his lungs, a 32 year old woman with myocarditis, several people, both men and women with Bell’s Palsy, a young girl who had a baby supposedly 2 weeks early weighing 2 pounds, another young girl’s baby was stillborn, people with swollen hard arms, many with rashes that last for months on end, brain bleeds, sudden deaths, stage 4 cancer – supposedly fast acting…I understand why they wanted us locked down not communicating. It sickens me to see the doctors giving little children these shots. I do believe the world has gone mad. Stay well.
James Lincoln says
Thank you for your reply, E T.
As you have pointed out, the side effects of the vaccine can indeed be horrific. It’s even more horrific if the vaccine is given to otherwise healthy people with good immune systems who should have no trouble handling a case of Covid.
As of said before, the only time that the vaccine (really a frontloaded therapeutic) should be given is when the risk of a life-threatening case of Covid outweighs the risk of the vaccine.

Grimly unsurprising, James.
