“Last year’s decision to leave the convention came after some officials from Erdogan’s Islam-oriented party had advocated for a review of the agreement, arguing it was inconsistent with Turkey’s conservative values.” And that it is. Erdogan has led Turkey farther and farther away from secularism; his goal is to Islamize the country and create a “pious generation.” He has also made no secret of his ambition to revive the Ottoman Empire, with himself as its leader. Sharia is crystal clear about the inferiority of women:
“Men are in charge of women, because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend of their property. So good women are obedient, guarding in secret what Allah has guarded. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, give them a warning and banish them to separate beds, and beat them. Then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them. Indeed, Allah is always high, exalted, great.” (Qur’an 4:34)
“And, Take in your hand a branch and strike with it, and do not break your oath.” (Qur’an 38:44)
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), offers hope for women in Turkey. He “vowed to return Turkey to the convention.” Kilicdaroglu promotes secularism and opposes Islamic terrorism; unfortunately, he also believes that jihad violence and the like “have nothing to do with Islam,” despite overt calls for violence in the Quran and Hadith. He would do better to tell it like it is, and then promote modernization.
“Turkish court upholds exit from treaty protecting women,” Associated Press, July 19, 2022:
ANKARA, Turkey — A top administrative court in Turkey ruled Tuesday that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to pull the country out of a key European treaty protecting women from violence was lawful, rejecting petitions seeking its cancellation, the state-run news agency reported.
Erdogan withdrew Turkey from the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention last year, prompting condemnation from women’s rights groups and Western countries. The landmark convention was signed in Istanbul in 2011.
Several women’s groups and other organizations had petitioned the Council of State, arguing that Erdogan’s move to pull out of the treaty through a presidential decree was unlawful. The court’s judges, however, ruled by a majority decision to reject the petitions, Anadolu Agency reported.
Yilmaz Tunc, a member of Erdogan’s ruling party, welcomed the court’s decision, saying it would put an end to “discussions that lack a legal basis.” The main opposition party leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, vowed to return Turkey to the convention “within a week or even 24 hours” should his center-left party come to power in an election next year.
Last year’s decision to leave the convention came after some officials from Erdogan’s Islam-oriented party had advocated for a review of the agreement, arguing it was inconsistent with Turkey’s conservative values by encouraging divorce and undermining the traditional family unit. Critics also claimed that it promoted homosexuality…..

I’m impressed that there was a court in Turkey to appeal to on this Erdogan decision. Although honestly, this is a political decision that shouldn’t involve any courts: it’s Turkish voters who decided that they want to go back to the Ottoman era and Erdogan is reflecting that
The Council of Europe should rebrand the treaty under some other city, and expel Turkey from it. Of course they won’t, since that would be ‘islamophobic’

All the women who voted for Erdogan through the years should have seen the result of voting for an Islamist.
Sharia law isn’t ‘BENIGN’ for women or for kafirs. They have the most to lose.
Now, women may be beaten by their husbands legally.
When Attaturk came to power he broke with Turkey’s Islamist past, uncoupling the mosque from the state.
If Turkey is to return to secularism, Turkey’s women have to wake up and realize how much they are going to lose by supporting Erdogan.

Turkey will never return to secularism. First of all, even during the Kemalist years, they never really embraced it, and now, w/ their Ottoman irredentists far outpopulating their secularists, they are a de-facto neo-Ottoman state, and that’s never going away again. Particularly when they are discovering that they have a shot at world islamic leadership – a better shot than Iran!

Attaturk was a voice of sanity within Turkey and he must be spinning in his grave with what Erdogan is doing to destroy the country he fought for and fought to establish.
