The suspect is a Spanish citizen, so apparently he has been bouncing around inside Europe a bit. He is clearly so grateful to the welcoming Finns that he wanted to introduce them to some of the joys of his own culture.
“The police suspect the man of training for an extremist Islamic terrorist crime – studied the use of weapons and the manufacture of explosives,” translated from “Poliisi epäilee miestä kouluttautumisesta ääri-islamistiseen terrorismirikokseen – opiskeli aseiden käyttöä ja räjähteiden valmistamista,” by Marjatta Rautio, Yle, March 6, 2023:
The police have completed a preliminary investigation in the case of a 21-year-old Spanish citizen who is suspected of being trained to commit a terrorist crime. The matter will be transferred to the prosecution, which will be done by the Deputy Crown Prosecutor Jukka Rappe.
The Central Criminal Police has investigated the suspected crime together with the Helsinki Police Department and the Protection Police.
The criminal suspicion came to light in connection with another case investigated by the Helsinki Police Department.
“The role of the Helsinki police has been significant. It’s a great thing that the matter has been resolved at such an early stage,” says the head of the investigation, crime commissioner Masi Puolakka from the Central Criminal Police.
The man suspected of the crime lives in the capital region and is a Spanish citizen. According to Puolaka, the suspected crime took place in Helsinki.
The police announced the preliminary investigation that had started and the arrest of the suspect on December 16.
Extremist Islamic material has been found in the suspect’s possession. During the preliminary investigation, it has become clear that he has been a member of groups distributing extremist Islamic material and obtained several manuals that teach, among other things, the use and handling of firearms and the manufacture of explosives.
“We suspect that the man has acquired and familiarized himself with the material in order to train himself for a terrorist act. The activity has been long-lasting. It started in 2019 and ended with an arrest in December of last year.”
According to the police, the suspect has also expressed his interest in traveling to areas where terrorist organizations are active. Puolakka does not want to say in more detail which areas are involved.
“The suspect has denied the crime. He has told the police that he was looking for information about extremist Islamist issues out of his own thirst for information.”
The police’s investigation has revealed no indications that the operation posed a danger to outsiders. In the preliminary investigation, for example, it has not appeared that the suspect had built or tried to build an explosive device.
Supo has previously estimated that the most significant terrorist threat in Finland is caused by people and small groups who support radical Islamist ideology or the extreme right.
In Finland, only Abderrahman Bouanane, who committed stabbings in Turku, has been convicted of terrorism crimes, and the District Court of Varsinais-Finland found him guilty of two murders committed with terrorist intent and eight attempted murders committed with the same intent.
