Burkina Faso: Jihad violence has displaced over two million people

Government military forces are clearly unequal to the task that they face.

Violence linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) group as of May 2023, has displaced more than two million people in Burkina Faso making the country one of the world’s fastest-growing populations of internally displaced people.

The majority of those displaced were women and children, and this has been causing an increase in humanitarian crises as the conflict pushed people from their homes into congested urban areas….

Military leaders who had taken over the government vowed to stem the insecurity, but jihadi attacks have been escalating and spreading since Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in September 2022….

The jihadis’ strategy of blocking towns, preventing people from moving freely and goods from flowing in, has compounded the displacement crisis. Some 800,000 people in more than 20 towns are under siege, say aid groups….
