The latest news makes clear that everything is not right in the Old Sod. In fact, everything has gang agley, if I am to believe what I read here a few months ago (and nothing has improved since then): “Paul Murphy: We don’t want to limit our baby by saying you’re a boy or you’re a girl. Let them decide,” by Jen Hogan, Irish Times, March 14, 2023:
An Irish lawmaker has said he doesn’t want to limit his newborn baby by labeling them as a boy or a girl, wanting them to have the freedom to decide their own gender.
Paul Murphy, an Irish People Before Profit–Solidarity politician who has represented the Dublin South-West constituency since 2014, sat down with the Irish Times newspaper to discuss his approach to fatherhood.
He explained how he and his partner, Jess, had trouble conceiving but were eventually successful via a third round of IVF and recently gave birth to a baby named Juniper.
I know just what he means. I have “trouble conceiving” too, as to how Paul Murphy was ever voted into office by the kind of sensible, no-nonsense people I grew up with on the banks of the Liffey. Perhaps they’ve moved.
“Regardless of whether it was male or female, it was going to be Juniper. I think it’s a gender-neutral name,” Murphy told the newspaper.
Juniper is a male, but Murphy insists the couple is not labeling the baby as a boy.
“We’re not gendering it. So we’re not describing Juniper as a boy, we’re describing Juniper as a baby, but it is male.
No, no need to “gender it.” Or for that matter, “gender them.” That would be very bad. It would give the baby ideas. And they shouldn’t have ideas. At least not yet. Eventually something will happen so that they will choose to gender themselves. Or not. As the case may be. Who knows? What’s to come is still unsure. Why push it? Let’s remain cautiously optimistic out of an abundance of caution. That all of this is mildly depressing is putting it mildly.
“We live in a deeply sexist and gendered society which creates certain expectations for boys and certain expectations for girls. And those things are changing in a positive direction, but there’s a very, very long way to go,” he said.
Deeply sexist and gendered. How true. Just the other day, I saw a woman pushing a pram, and when I said to her “they is a very nice he or she baby,” she gave me a dirty look.
The Irish MP said he will use the “they” pronoun to describe the new-born, adding that while he and his partner will not “be out there correcting people’s pronouns,” the parents “don’t want to limit the kind of future they will foresee for themselves, the role they will perceive for themselves, the type of play they will perceive for themselves by saying ‘you’re a boy or you’re a girl,” and just want Juniper “to decide for themselves.”
Why not, instead of referring to the baby as “they,” simply call it “boy or girl,” so as to make sure all options remain open to them? As in, “I think ‘boy or girl’ wants a nap,” or “’boy or girl’ needs a change of diaper.” They will be pleased when they grow up and realize that they still have a chance to make their very own choice of gender. Or not, as the case may be. They might decide to keep all options open for the rest of their lives – why close off any possibility until the last syllable of recorded time?
“You want to dress in pink? Fire ahead. You want to dress in blue? Fire ahead. You want to play football? Brilliant. You want to go dancing? Amazing… it’s just not to limit. Obviously, the vast majority of parents do gender their child, and I’ve no criticism of that whatsoever, no judgment. But it is true that if you put the label, boy or girl, on your child, you definitely increase the chances of them going down one road or another.”…
Lots of possibilities suggest themselves. How about calling your baby a “genius” in the hope that you definitely increase the chances of them going down that road? Say it enough times and they will begin to believe it. And if they begin to believe it, well then, they just might become it. The well-known power of suggestion. Just how hard would it be to be a genius, anyway? There are so far 1,111 MacArthur Geniuses. Now how would a genius think of that number? No, not that it’s a prime number, because though it sure looks like it, it hasn’t chosen to go down that road. They — a genius — would point out that 1,111 is the numerical equivalent of a palindrome. Why didn’t we think of that? Oh, that’s what makes geniuses different from the rest of us.They perceive things that the rest of us miss. We didn’t have parents who told us we could be anything we wanted, we weren’t raised by Paul Murphy and his partner Jess.
And what about addressing your child as “Mr. or Madam President,” starting when they have just begun to lisp the names of Daddy and Mommy, or “Daddy and Mommy,” in the hope that someday they will be the leader of the country. It should definitely increase their chances. President of what country, you may well ask. Why, whatever country they want to be head of. Let’s not shut down any possibilities.
“We had a healthy baby, and we are trying to create a home environment which doesn’t place limits or expectations on what Juniper is interested in or who they will become. That is all.”
No limits, then. No expectations. And since race, as we all know, is merely a social construct, let them choose their own race, or even try on a few of them, seriatim, for size. Limitless possibilities for people of color and colorless people and everything in between. I’m all in with Paul Murphy and Jess. What about you?

I was seeing some YouTube videos that touched on discussions about dads trying to “chestfeed” their babies. While it may have initially looked funny, it was pretty cruel if one factors in that when the babies are hungry & cry, that’s their only way to send that message, & they’re not themselves capable of getting out of their parents’ way & feeding themselves. Also, serious mothers during their pregnancy & immediately after tend to be careful about what they have – not only do they avoid alcohol, but even certain fruits like pineapples & strawberries, but here, we have pretend-women high up on hormones feeding that to the babies
There was one occasion when my son was an infant when he was hungry & started suckling my nipples. I instantly handed him over to my wife, chuckling over his brilliance. It didn’t strike me to torture him by actually letting him try ?

Thanks for your detailed reply, Infidel.

This man is a horribly confused human being and has no business being a parent. We live in an age where falsehoods aplenty masquerade as truths. And yes, I feel badly for this baby because it has already started out in life in the negative.
What the Hell has happened to the West? Disorders are now characterized as lifestyles and basic biological realities are denied. All this is a prescription for disaster—and which surely is now occurring in a West that year by year is ever increasingly losing its collective mind. I would end here by noting that ALL of this rot is driven by Leftthink though apathetic and cowardly non-Leftists not challenging this rot are also part of this enormous problem.

“He explained how he and his partner, Jess,…recently gave birth to a baby named Juniper.”
Ah, yes, “they” became pregnant and “they” gave birth. And the baby was named “Juniper.” Before birth, evidently. If gender isn’t decided before birth, how can a baby be born already having a name?
Any men in the readership here who would welcome being named “Juniper”? In the meantime, instead of boy or girl, “he” or “she,” the baby is still an “it.”
I read yesterday that some people…sick in the mental processing department….are deliberately disabling themselves. One woman blinded herself at the age of 21 and said she should have been ‘born blind.’
Insane people raising children are going to have mentally crippled children. I feel very sorry for little Juniper.

In that documentary “What is a woman?”, Matt Walsh raised this issue w/ one of the doctors he interviewed, asking her what if a person identified as an amputee and wanted to have one or more of his limbs removed. The doctor he was interviewing said w/ a straight face that she would recommend him for psychological evaluation, w/o realizing the irony of her statement
As far as names go, this crowd is fine w/ giving boys girl-names and girls boy-names. Not just that, in schools, they allow kids to rename themselves if they’ve decided to change their “genders”. Normally, only an adult has that right, and has to go through a legal process to get it done (aside from a marrying woman adapting her husband’s last name, which incidentally is too patriarchal for today’s women). But today’s schoolkids are allowed to change their names on the fly, & others are subjected to grief if they “deadname” them
Not only should the department of education be shut down, but every school should as well. Let every parent assume personal responsibility for their kid’s education
somehistory says
When parents give stupid names to their kids, girl’s names to boys, it always makes me think of Johnny Cash and “A Boy Named Sue.”
I heard the song he did about having his brain exchanged with a criminal …he could no longer sing, and began holding up banks and people in the audience….and then his brain being given to a chicken…”Johnny Chicken” and “The Chicken in Black.”
But these idiot parents aren’t really thinking of their kids as much as they want to appear hip…if that’s still the term…and be “in” with the In crowd. If they had the child’s best interest in mind, they would think about how their child was going to feel when he goes out and has to interact with others.

I wonder how much of this excrement plays out in non-English speaking countries in Europe, where the gender grammar may well be very different? And whether mainland European countries participate in this insanity English, which became the default connecting language of the world, is now a liability, since it’s the vector by which LGBTQIA2S+ ideology is geographically spread throughout the world. The more isolated a country is from English, the better its chances to fly below the ?️⚧️ radar
Wellington says
An interesting and salient point, though I don’t fault the English language one bit here but rather the fools and idiots aplenty misusing it.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
While that it true, it’s worth noting that the publishers of the world’s leading English dictionaries – Merriam Websters’, Chambers, Oxford,… have been adapting this woke insanity: allowing “they” to be used for singular people and the resultant use of derivative words like “themself” which would normally be grammatically incorrect. When the people who’re supposed to keep the standards straight are so corrupted, then it’s worth exploring alternatives to English that do not have gender pronouns, verbs, adjectives & so on
Imagine Medical textbooks telling MD students that it’s possible for men to give birth, or women to impregnate men. Would it be worth pursuing OBGYN careers in such a climate?

I was teaching my six-year-old granddaughter scrabble and said something about a dictionary. She asked me what that is and I explained, said I would buy her one and we played on. I did get her last year’s Webster and now, even before reading your comment, have been worrying about some of the words to which she will be exposed.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
These days, I just use reference.com, which contains the dictionary & thesaurus apps. As it is, the intellectual brilliance of today’s kids hardly leaves much scope for one to explore new words: one would have to get an urban dictionary or a colloquial dictionary to figure out what they are saying
If you bought her “Websters”, just look up the meaning of “They”, and see whether it allows for any singular use. Previously, one could have made an argument that traditional dictionaries like Websters, Chambers,… were superior to free online dictionaries like dictionary.com, but I’m not so sure that that’s true anymore
somehistory says
the first two definitions are the traditional meaning…of more than one person
Number 3 allows for calling “that one” if the gender is nonbinary, unknown or intentionally not revealed.”
I’m glad the writers included the first two definitions and that since they did put the nonsense in, it’s only at the last spot.
My granddaughter is only allowed a very limited amount of time on line. She loves books and I thought an actual one she could hold would be better than using her online time….which she uses to watch nature documentaries…to look up words.
I have a very old dictionary…it’s actually falling apart from use…and a newer one that has also grown somewhat old, but I use the online dictionaries when I’m online with other things.
Older dictionaries are like older wine due to the nonsense of this world of today.
Watto35 says
Yes, always amuses me that in France, where the word ‘person’ is femenine, if your are talking about a male as a ‘person’ then the pronoun is ‘she’. For instance: John is a very tall person. She is over 6feet tall’
࿗Infidel࿘ says
I believe German tops that. There, “frau”, which means either an adult woman over 35 or a Mrs, is feminine, but fraulein, which means an unmarried woman below 35 as well as mädchen, which means girl, are neuter. One says “die frau”, but “das fraulein” and “das mädchen”
Jim says
There have always been progressive parents who try to apply the latest fads of parenthood to their children. This seems to be drawing on the identity politics of the far left. They are trying to fit their child into the ideals of leftist thinkers who promulgate identity politics, social constructionism, perhaps rational choice and the new possibilities of creating your own world and expecting others to conform and comply with the rules. Respect for others and their values driven to absurdity.

I used to think that we were rather hard on people, when we mocked men/boys for wearing pink shirts or pink socks: my attitude then was that it’s just a color, & everybody has different preferences. Similarly, I considered the metrosexual movement in the 00s a tad amusing, but not much more. But seeing where we are today w/ the trans, I’ve come around, and now understand those who mocked these trends a lot better
That said, I wish boys & men – particularly boys, had a more attractive range of apparel to choose from like girls do, even if it isn’t as effeminate as female apparel

Needless to say poor ” Juniper ” would’ve been better off had his/her/she/they/it’s parents remained childless. The kid will tend to have a hard life being raised by two nut cases. Science did not do “him” a favour.

I suspect (and hope) kids raised this way will figure things out in due course. You don’t make a “chair” into a “table” by calling it one. Juniper can be expected to figure it all out at HIS first ballet lesson.
