Biden Warned Netanyahu Not to Hit Hamas Too Hard

“We support Israel taking necessary and proportionate action”

There’s been a pattern to these conflicts. Hamas launches an attack on Israel. The White House announces that it has Israel’s back. Israel carries out some air strikes. People die in the air strikes. Hamas claims that there were a lot of civilian deaths. Local Arab Muslim countries offer to negotiate a ceasefire. The White House pressures Israel to accept and demands a timetable for the end of the fighting.

Considering the sheer horror and scale of the Hamas attack, the seeming unity, will this play out any differently?

As I mentioned earlier, Biden’s speech had some good moral outrage in it. But moral outrage is rhetoric. What about policy? Unlike outrage, policy is about specifics. And while people rightly zeroed in on Biden’s condemnation of Hamas atrocities, there’s an entire section that strikes a very different and very familiar note.

“I just got off the phone with — the third call with Prime Minister Netanyahu. And I told him if the United States experienced what Israel is experiencing, our response would be swift, decisive, and overwhelming. We also discussed how democracies like Israel and the United States are stronger and more secure when we act according to the rule of law. Terrorists purpo- — purposefully target civilians, kill them. We uphold the laws of war — the law of war. It matters. There’s a difference.”

Behind the slick language (that of the speechwriter, not Biden) is a familiar narrative. Israel has to take out Hamas, which operates in urban areas and hides behind its own civilians, somehow without killing enemy civilians.

Hamas has told Gaza residents not to evacuate and leave the areas where Israel has warned that it will strike because it wants them to die.

“Ahead of airstrikes against targets belonging to the terror groups, and out of a desire to minimize civilian casualties, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) has been sending warning messages to the residents of the Gaza Strip urging them to evacuate areas that are about to be targeted in strikes. In response to these messages, media outlets operated by Hamas and PIJ have been instructing residents of the Gaza Strip not to heed these warnings and not to share them or forward them to others.

On October 10, 2023, the spokesperson department of Hamas’s interior ministry wrote on the ministry’s Telegram channel: “An important note: We repeat our call on the residents to ignore the voice messages being sent randomly by the occupation to their phones demanding that they leave their homes. Their goal is to arouse panic and fear as part of a psychological warfare [campaign] accompanying the occupation’s aggression against us.”

These are the same rules that Israel has been playing by in earlier conflicts and they don’t work.

The Biden administration is also warning Israel not to be “disproportionate”.

“We remain focused on holding the terrorists accountable for their attacks, and we support Israel taking necessary and proportionate action to defend its country and protect its people, and in doing so U.S. citizens living, working and traveling in Israel,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in an emailed statement.

“Proportionate” action.

What’s a proportionate response to having entire communities wiped out, women kidnapped and raped, children abducted, babies killed by a genocidal Islamic terrorist group?

I don’t think Watson wants to consider that proposition too closely.

But the Biden administration is, despite some aggressive rhetoric, following the old familiar playbook. Hopefully, Israel will deviate from it or the end result will be the same as it was during previous campaigns against Hamas.

  1. Apparently the Egyptians claim they warned Israel 3 days before hamas attacked so questions need to be asked how the usually well informed MOSSAD,the usually alert IDF might have been misinformed[?} and how Netanyahu’s Government missed that.
    The Border with Gaza is well monitored surely.

    • My contacts are telling me that the previous Government relaxed all of Bibi”s Security Policies, and that this was a ” set-up ” against Israel.

    • If I was a Gaza resident I would be thinking, “We voted for these guys then they put their weapons in our home, and we let them. Now they have torn into a wasp’s nest and the wasps are coming for them. They tell us stay there, we’ll come and stand by you. I’m getting the heck outta here!”

  3. biden would be underwhelming; but since he said he would be “overwhelming,” he shouldn’t begrudge Israel actually doing enough to be overwhelming.

    It’s always the same…Israel has the *right* to respond, but it must not be in-kind. It must be a small pinprick after being stabbed with swords.

  7. The politicians should lay off, and let the military accomplish their mission unimpeded. The IDF/IAF know EXACTLY how to handle Hamas and Gaza. They need to retake Gaza, kill, or displace everyone there by pushing them into the Sinai, and open up Gaza for Israeli settlements while maintaining an occupying force to ensure that the Palis stay expelled. The Gaza waterfront would make an ideal location for hotels and a tourist industry that will rival Tel Aviv.

    • Let them go for it. Why didn’t the muslims do it. I guess they only have brains for war, killing babies, killing non muslims and muslims, and cying they are victims. Crocodile tears for sure. They can’t fool everyone.

    • The land belongs to God, it was promised to the Israeli people God made a unconditional covenant to the Jewish people the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were blessed with the land along with their descendants for ever “The earth is the LORD’S and the fullness thereof….”

If you want to be a loser listen to our government because they are real good at losing in spite of the fact that our troops are winners. Man I hate those DC losers. DC changed the name of their football team from Redskins to the Commanders, oh boy is that name a laugh. Should have named the team the Washington bug-outs.That name is more realistic.

  9. Since Joe Biden did , basically gave the warning type message to Benjamin Netanyahu of “No to hit Hamas too hard.” It’s very obvious that treacherous old Joe must really admire and like the aggression of the hostile violent and murderous jihad of Islam.

    It’s actually impossible to “hit Hamas too hard.” The reason why this is so is because as hard as the Israeli military can strike Hamas it never hard enough..

    Nevertheless Israel does need to strike Hamas as hard as she can keep on hitting that deadly savage jihad entity and not stop hitting it.

    If not ,Hamas will a resurgence, and in time, launch another malicious jihad attack against the State of Israel and murder more of her citizens.

    That awful message that jihadist loving Joe is complete nonsense and total 100 % balderdash.

    In contrast to the words of folly given by Biden ,there is the wisdom that was spoken by a real US President,James Monroe,who declared in a speech “The right of self -defence never ceases . It is among the most sacred ,and alike necessary to nations and individuals.”

  10. There is a great difference between the fool and terrible “advice”of Joe Biden, of “Not hitting Hamas too hard” As if such a this is possible and in contrast the wisdom spoken by a genuine US President , Thomas Jefferson, who had rightly said “With every barbarous people….force is law.”

    It should alos be added that the jihadists who make up Hamas can not and will not take heed of reason or logic . The only lanuage that they are capable of understanding is that of the lanuage of the might of a strong brutal military might. Therefore , that’s the way that they should be dealt with.

    For exampl, John Kerry; his family, friends & associates have very close links with Iran & those in it’s regime.
    Many in positions of power in the US do too.

    Listen to its president, who is the most lukewarm and unprincipled man who has ever had his abode in the White House, a man who has always been in politics for personal gain, and who operates more like a leader of a demolition team than anything else.

    The US is not even important because of financial strength as it is dependent on China as a lender, even to finance it’s planned aggression on China. How well is that going to play out?

  18. Funny we bombed Japan and Germany who attacked the U.S.A and Europe and killed a lot of civilians to end WWll. So why is everyone so concerned about civilian deaths of MUSLIMS when Islamic terrorist just invaded Israel and intentionally murdered Israels civilians. Hit them and hit them hard is the only answer to the muslim/islamic leaders, attackers and supporters, that includes the civilian population if they are in the way.

  20. I was mad and a great hate ovetcame me. So much hate for Palestinian Arabs after the massacre. This afternoon I was overcome with a deep sleep. I dreamt Of speaking to a sacred person. He told me that HAMAS attacked the villages that employ Arabs from Gaza. This was done to stop any friendship and to seal the satanic hate between Arabs and Jews. This attack was equally on Jews and Palestinians. Iran is the perpetrator of all this and France is the country that initially supported the evil of the Kommeni. Peace.
