Putin has a real knack for aligning with people he should not align with. In his own way, he’s a doofus. And he has managed to make Russia (once again) into a pariah state. The man is wretched. He can’t die too soon but since Russia never learns I am not optimistic that once Putin is gone it will finally realize that its best interests do not lie with tyrants.
As an aside but still pertinent, America became the great polity it did first and foremost because of freedom. Same for others like ancient Athens and England. Russia has many attributes—a highly intelligent and educated population, immense natural resources, a tremendous artistic tradition, etc.—but it has virtually always missed one key ingredient, i.e., freedom. Imagine Russia with all its positives plus freedom. It could be so great not only for itself but for all mankind. Well, Putin will never bring this to Russia, now will he? But will any Russian? No Thomas Jefferson or Cleisthenes or Gladstone in Russian history. What a damn shame.

Russians do not confuse liberty with license as many in the West do. And we have the traditions of the Cossacks and the ” Old Believers”, of which I am from. There is a term Sobornost which doesn’t translate exactly into English but captures the superiority of cooperative freedom over the atomized hyper individualism of the West. Over time, I have watched videos of various parts of Russia – from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok – from some Russian YouTubers, and am pretty impressed w/ the country. One thing I concluded was that while they may be “White”, culturally, they have little in common w/ Europe, and more in common w/ Asian countries. As someone familiar w/ both American & Indian culture, Russian culture more closely resembles the latter than the former
In modern geography, I’ve changed my view of the limits of various regions. Like the Middle East at one time just described everything from Turkey to Yemen and Egypt to Iran, but ever since 2001, I’ve added Pakistan and Afghanistan to my working definition of the Middle East. Mainly due to the fact that events in those 2 countries were driven by events in Saudi Arabia, Emirates and Qatar in the 90s
Similarly, from my observations of Russian culture and how it has just rejected some of the libertine messages of the West, particularly the LGBTQ+ movement, as well as culturally resembling today’s Asia (and maybe 20th century Western Europe), I tend to think of all of Russia as an Asian, rather than a European country, despite the fact that 75% of Russians live in the European quarter of that country. They may be Eastern Orthodox Christians, but a lot of their mannerisms resemble Asians a lot more than Europe. I’ve noticed that in its global breakdown of the world, Breitbart lists Russia under Asia rather than Europe

Good remarks. I would say that we are our own civilization, and always have been, until Antichrist Tsar Peter forced a godless kind of Western Modernity upon us. Some of us anyway, and times are changing. Putin to many in Russia is too liberal by their standards, but about as liberal as can be tolerated in a leader. Indeed, the more responsible in America and other Western nations which have been free recognized the vital importance of comprehending that liberty must be accompanied by common sense and self-discipline. And my major point remains: Russians do not grasp the importance of liberty as did others like the ancient Athenians, the Dutch, English, Americans, et al. If Russia had explored the parameters of freedom as certain other nations have it would have achieved a greatness it never has. This is my take on the this matter.

Historically you are spot-on correct. Yes indeed Founding Fathers also conveyed that the America they formed was to be for people of decent respectable moral character.
Having lived in what was the USSR, I find it sad that the old Soviet residue became Neo Soviet. Many oppressive Soviet laws still remain especially with reguards to the Firearms laws. The more that the US is forced to dedicate against Russia implies the less that the US can dedicate against China.
