#MyJihad in Pakistan: Islamic supremacists murder three more polio eradication workers — 8 in 48 hours

This is no surprise. As I noted yesterday, last summer a Pakistani Muslim cleric said that polio vaccinations were un-Islamic. And you know what happens to un-Islamic things in Pakistan.

An update on this story. “3 more polio workers shot in Pakistan; 8 dead in 48 hours,” by Jibran Ahmed for Reuters, December 19 (thanks to Kenneth):

PESHAWAR, Pakistan “” Three workers in a polio eradication campaign were shot Wednesday in Pakistan, and two of them were killed, the latest in an unprecedented string of attacks over the past three days that has partially halted the U.N.-backed campaign.

The United Nations in Pakistan has pulled all staff involved in the immunization campaign off the streets, spokesman Michael Coleman said….

Government officials were surprised by the violence, saying they had not expected attacks in areas far from the Taliban’s strongholds and they would have to change tactics in the health campaign.

“We didn’t expect such attacks in Karachi,” said Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, minister for human rights, who oversees the polio campaign. He was referring to the southern commercial hub where there have been attacks this week.

“In far flung areas where the threats are more pronounced, we have been providing polio teams security.”

Wednesday saw four separate attacks. In the northwestern district of Charsadda, men on motorbikes shot dead a woman and her driver, police and health officials said.

Hours earlier, a male health worker was shot and badly wounded in the nearby provincial capital of Peshawar. He was in critical condition, said a doctor at the Lady Reading Hospital where he is being treated.

Four other women health workers were shot at but not hit in nearby Nowshera, said Jan Baz Afridi, deputy head of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation. Two women health workers were shot at in Dwasaro village in Charsadda, police said.

It was not clear who was behind the violence.

Many Islamists, including Taliban militants, have long opposed the campaign. Some say it aims to sterilize Muslims, while one militant commander said it could not continue unless attacks by U.S. drone aircraft stopped.

The Taliban have repeatedly threatened health workers involved in the campaign. Some workers said they received calls telling them to stop working with the “infidels” just before the attacks.

But a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Ihsanullah Ihsan, told Reuters his group was not involved in the violence….

Khokar said Taliban hostility to the campaign increased after it emerged that the CIA had used a fake vaccination campaign to try to gather information about Osama bin Laden, before he was found and killed in a Pakistani town last year.

    ………………….

“#MyJihad”, above, is a wry reference to *this* bit of ludicrous Taqiyya:

“Hamas-linked CAIR applies cosmetics to the concept of jihad”

Meanwhile, of course, actual Jihad savagery continues apace, as this story shows.

*This* is Islam”murdering good people who are trying to save your children from a dread disease.

Actually, there is *nothing* unprecedented about this horror. Pious Muslims have prevented polio eradication campaigns before in Pakistan, as well as in places like Yemen and Nigeria.

I guess Mohammed Ali was more modest in those days. Not yet ‘the greatest’.

“Pakistan; 8 dead in 48 hours,” medical workers……and minor hasan qibbles around about his beard and keeps it, but the USA judge gets canned. oh we are living in a crazy world.

wasn’t it the 1/2 white in the white house office who blew the cover for the GOOD HEARTED doctor who helped get bin laden? 30 years he pays, if he lives that long, because of o’blabber the soulless.

In 1954, Salk’s polio vaccine was beta tested upon Americas eight-year olds. I was one of these “Polio Pioneers”. I don’t resent being a test subject. Public health concerns are like that: they trump any individuals personal perogatives (think Typhoid Mary, the illiterate typhoid carrier who worked in high turnover restaurant jobs).

I went to school with kids with braces and crutches. When I was five, the mother of my friend, the only person I knew who could make ice cubes with milk (I never figured out how), died from polio. She was the only one in the family to fall victim. There were entire summers when the public swimming pools were closed, and when I wasn’t allowed to leave the yard. Doctor Salks vaccine changed this.

Clay wasn’t a mouthy buffoon. That was an act. Who was the best paid professional wrestler of Clays youth? Why? Gorgeous George, because people (the ticket buying rubes) hated him and paid premium ticket prices to see him lose. Clay used the same principle. It worked.

What in the world are those Pakistani troglodytes thinking? Preserving the polio virus? They are a curse upon us.

let them get polio, who cares…..”

Unfortunately, it isn’t just *them* who will suffer. When they travel/migrate to civilised countries, they’ll bring their germs with them, and infect innocent people.

    Otherwise, I agree with you.

  6. says

Except they don’t infect innocent people who are vaccinated. According to the UN polio remains a problem in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Not in the rest of the world.Polio is a problem in these countries because of the refusal of ignorant Muslims to be vaccinated. If you want to protect the innocent make sure they are vaccinated. Then if Muslims continue to refuse vaccination even if they migrate the disease will be spread among them not among the innocent.

    …………………….

Glad you benefited from Salk’s vaccine, Jake. I’m a few years younger than you, and missed the terrible polio scares entirely.

But I did get occasional disturbing hints of what it was like, in stories, films, and tv shows from just a few years earlier.

Later I understood how lucky I and every other child of my generation was.

And it isn’t just in Pakistan, Jake. Pious Muslims have declared polio vaccines un-Islamic in many parts of Dar-al-Islam, with all the predictable suffering and death you might expect.
