The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has condemned the Beslan massacres. From SBS, with thanks to Nicolei:
The president of the Federation, Ameer Ali, says the rebels involved do not deserve to be called Muslims.
“They call themselves Muslims, but they are not Muslims.
“People can say in the name of Jesus they go and do some dastardly act, and then do we call them Christians?
“It’s exactly the situation that we are facing.
“To go and commit this barbaric crime in the name of Islam, that is what I just can’t accept.
“They are not in the fold of Islam, these people.
“They have to be condemned.
“They are the traitors of the community.”
Dr Ali says he’s concerned that the Beslan incident could cause a backlash against Australian Muslims.
“Since September 11th, there has been harassment going on, so incidents like this can again bring on that sort of backlash.
“That’s why it’s better to warn the society this had nothing to do with Muslims in this country, and we should not blame the whole community for this.”
Unfortunately, Dr. Ali’s statement doesn’t take into account the fact that Islam is the only religion with teachings like these:
Said the great philosopher Averroes: “Most scholars agree that fortresses may be assailed with mangonels, no matter whether there are women and children within them or not. This is based on the fact that the Prophet used mangonels against the population of al-Ta’if.”
And according to the renowned Sufi Al-Ghazali: “One must go on jihad at least once a year…one may use a catapult against them [non-Muslims] when they are in a fortress, even if among them are women and children. One may set fire to them and/or drown them…”
And Ibn Taymiyya, Osama’s favorite classical Muslim theologian: “As for those who cannot offer resistance or cannot fight, such as women, children, monks, old people, the blind, handicapped and their likes, they shall not be killed unless they actually fight with words [eg. by propaganda] and acts [by spying or otherwise assisting in the warfare]. Some jurists are of the opinion that all of them may be killed, on the mere ground that they are unbelievers, but they make an exception for women and children since they constitute property for Muslims.”
Let him repudiate those ideas specifically, and we may be getting somewhere.
