PARIS “” French authorities have detained a suspect accused of participating in a recruitment ring for fighters against the government of Afghanistan.
An official says an anti-terrorism judge has issued preliminary charges against the 29-year-old suspect for alleged “criminal association with a terrorist enterprise” and ordered him locked up.
The man was arrested Thursday in the southeastern city of Grenoble on suspicion of links to an Internet site in Belgium aimed at recruiting jihadists to send to Afghanistan.
According to investigators, at least two people used information on the site to travel to Afghanistan.
The website has been linked to Malika El Aroud, the Belgian widow of a man involved in the killing of anti-Taliban warlord Ahmed Shah Massoud two days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Belgian authorities detained El Aroud on Friday.
