It’s hard to rate and compare mistakes, but Trump is certainly correct that the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan were immense mistakes. Bush and his team contended that we would be welcomed as liberators and that Western-style secular republics were going to be established that would become models for the rest of the Islamic world. Bush thought this because he was listening to people who were telling him that Islam was a religion of peace and was perfectly compatible with democratic, secular government; consequently, he didn’t anticipate that the desire for Sharia among the people of Iraq and Afghanistan would foredoom any attempt at democratization.
The U.S. wasted untold numbers of lives and trillions of dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for what? Failed Sharia states riven by endless wars. Nothing is going to change the longer we stay in Afghanistan, either.
“Trump slams Bush for ‘worst single mistake’ in U.S. history,” by John Solomon and Buck Sexton, The Hill, September 19, 2018:
President Trump took a little time during a policy-rich interview in the Oval Office to give his take on the biggest mistake in American history.
Was it the Civil War? Nah. The failure to stop Sept. 11? Nope. How about Pearl Harbor? Not even close.
“The worst single mistake ever made in the history of our country: going into the Middle East, by President Bush,” the president said during an exclusive interview with Hill.TV. “Obama may have gotten (U.S. soldiers) out wrong, but going in is,to me, the biggest single mistake made in the history of our country.”
So why was it so catastrophic?
“Because we spent $7 trillion in the Middle East. Now if you wanna fix a window some place they say, ‘oh gee, let’s not do it.’ Seven trillion, and millions of lives — you know, ‘cause I like to count both sides. Millions of lives,” the president explained.
“To me, it’s the worst single mistake made in the history of our country. Civil war you can understand. Civil war, civil war. That’s different. For us to have gone into the Middle East, and that was just, that was a bad day for this country, I will tell you.”…

After 9/11 The west and America at the forefront, felt that something must be done to curb Islamic terrorist and Saddam Hussein seemed a great target for his grabbing more territory, though most of the 9/11 terrorist were from Saudi Arabia…not Iraq, but we just had to make a SHOW and the SHOW maybe turned out to be the wrong kind of SHOW and has led to our “bog down” in the mid east.
There is plenty of mistakes to go around by past U.S. Presidents. and armchair quarterbacks are also plentiful.

Or if we were going to nation-build, it should have been on the basis of a constitution that institutionalized freedom of speech and religion. Then we should have enforced that. But of course it probably would have been impossible to enforce, even if there were a US consensus on the matter, and there was nothing of the sort.
gravenimage says
Agreed. I think our taking out bin Laden’s hiding place was actually a good thing. It was staying for seventeen years trying to build a democracy on such stony ground that was the mistake.
Sons of Liberty says
Exactly, Steve ! I believe they had to pay a price for 9/11 ( Al Qaeda and the Taliban ) but to stay and nation build was a mistake . However, the BIGGEST mistake was made by TRAITOR Bill Clinton when he refused to take Bin Laden when he was offered by Sudan after UBL had declared war on the United States.. Then he refused to take him out on numerous occasions . Therein lies the path to 9/11 along with the Bush administration not taking the threat more seriously when they took over early in 2001.
Carolyne says
“Nation Building” in an Islamic country is a waste of personnel and materiel. Because of the nature of Islam, the populace in these countries neither want nor understand civilized government. We were just killing people and committing suicide by the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, They can never, as long as Islam exists, become anything more than the barbarians that they are. And as noted above, most of the 9/11 terrorists were
Saudis so we went after the wrong countries. But since Saudi Arabia has bought many of our top government minions, we could not invade the source of terrorism, Saudi Arabia.
Debra says
Lucky for them (Saudi Arabia) we’re their perfect slaves, wasting our precious blood and treasure fighting their wars, and at the same time massively importing their people into our Country to build their command and control centers (aka mosques) and then grinding against our Constitution, using law fare, every chance they get.
“I SUMMON MY BLUE-EYED SLAVE ANYTIME IT PLEASES ME. I COMMAND THE AMERICANS TO SEND ME THEIR BRAVEST SOLDIERS TO DIE FOR ME. ANYTIME I CLAP MY HANDS, A STUPID GENIE CALLED THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR APPEARS TO DO MY BIDDING. WHEN THE AMERICANS DIE IN MY SERVICE , THEIR BODIES ARE FROZEN IN METAL BOXES BY THE US EMBASSY AND AMERICAN AIRPLANES CARRY THEM AWAY, AS IF THEY NEVER EXISTED. TRULY, AMERICA IS MY FAVORITE SLAVE.”
I don’t know if this is an accurate quote, but it seems like it certainly could be.

Oh, that quote is attributed to King Fahd Bin Abdul-Aziz in 199$

I think USA foreign policy towards Saudi Arabia and other Muslim Nations had something to do with the invasion of Iraq, Bosnia, Libya and the Arab Springs in Egypt, libya, and Tunisia.
Helped make Afghanistan into what it is today with support of the Mujahideen.
We cater too much to fundamentalist Islamic Nations and it clouds our foreign policy.
Having the Caliphate in Chief in charge of the USA does not help either.
The NeoCons are just as bad or not worse and think boots on the ground and nation building are really going to improve the mess in the Middle East. Our military is delusional as well.
Of course Western politicians thinking Islam is the Religion of Peace is the bedrock of stupidity in any foreign policy.
Steve says
I definitely think the invasion of Iraq had a lot to do with the Saudis. Saddam was scaring the Saudis, so they snapped their fingers, and their American lackeys did their bidding. All for free.
commonsense says
Steve, I recall reading a revelatory article by Hugh Fitzgerald, posted here many years ago, where Hugh stated that Bush II’s decision to go into Iraq and attempt to create a Western-style democracy there was the due to his listening to expatriate Shi’ites from Iraq (and possibly elsewhere) who were living in the U.S., who convinced him that such a gambit was not only possible, but would be welcomed by the Iraqis themselves. These Shi’ites were lying through their teeth, their actual motive being the removal of Saddam Hussein, who was a Sunni and hostile to the restive Shi’ite majority. Bush, knowing nothing of Islam and of the internal matters of Iraq, listened to them. The Shi’ites promoting this had no desire to risk their own lives to bring about the overthrow of this Baathist, Sunni dictatorship, and conned the U.S. government into doing the dirty work for them. The Saudis, in fact, were probably supporters of the Sunni government of Saddam Hussein, and would have been opposed to efforts to unseat him.
Indiana Tom says
I think Saddam made the Saudis nervous. Remember Desert Shield when we were in a defensive posture in Saudi Arabia?
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iraq in 1990 after Saddam Hussein’s regime ordered the invasion of Kuwait. While Riyadh gave tacit approval of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, it was reluctant to engage with the new political order after Saddam’s fall and as Iranian influence grew.

mummymovie says
That’s correct: Ahmed Chalabi was the Shi’a expat’s name.
That evil SOB Dick Cheney (the guy who was REALLY running our country) was more than happy to listen, thinking that as soon as he brought in American-style capitalism to the heart of the oppressed Middle East, the rest of the islamofascist dictatorships and regimes would simply fall like dominoes, and Cheney et al would go down in the history books and be lauded as heroic geniuses who toppled them all.
I remember reading that when these seriously misinformed chickenhawks cooked up the evidence to allow them to play around with the lives of our troops, they didn’t even know there were two opposing sects of islam -Sunni & Shi’a- in Iraq (and Chalabi wasn’t going to fill them in on that omnipresent risk, so the flock of arrogant war mongers in the White House at the time pressured Colin Powell to sell the ill-fated fiasco, and they were off to the races with their grandiose scheme.
Aside from the nature of islam itself, what they did is much of the reason we now find ourselves where we are today, with the menace of islamic jihad going on all around us, and the worldwide invasion of islam into civilized Western societies, the hijra, now in full-effect with muslim “refugees” pouring into the West with no end in sight, and the enemies of freedom more emboldened than ever.
Saddam was the plug in the dam, and those goddamned fools took him out. (Contrary to the oft-repeated mantra of the Bush admin, the world was NOT better off without Saddam Hussein in it.) To call it a mistake is a gross understatement: Treason would have been a more appropriate.
The treasonous Cheney is now LOVING this Russia-Trump BS (you can always tell he’s happy when he’s keeping his mouth shut instead of try to polish up and spin his shameful legacy on Sunday morning news shows), because it’s taking the spotlight of him (albeit very unfairly) and his cabal of lackeys like Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, who should have been locked-up at least for what they did, not only to Americans and Iraqis, but for the chaos they have wrought upon the free world.
I agree with Trump in many things, and wholeheartedly on his statement. I had been on top of the Word Trade Center as a young man, and I remember, leading up to our foolhardy and reckless invasion of Iraq, you just had a feeling something. Very bad was gonna happen, and boy did it ever.

True the strong man dictators in the Middle East keep the Islamics from craving up the territory and bring stability that what should be happening in Syria today. The fools who run our state department in the past know nothing about Islam, that the Shites and Sunnis have been fighting each other over 1000 years. That Saudi Arabi is not our friend that the governments that currently ” control ” (if you consider warlords fighting each other to the death controlling running a country) Afghanistan , Syria, Iran, are not our friends. There are no good guys running the 1400 year shit show we call the middle east except Israel .The foundation for Islamic people Islam demands a slave, master mentality ,as long as the people of these countries believe this fascist system is the way to run your life ,in the government , in their clan, in their personal family structure you will have bloodlust war and internal and exported world wide terrorism .There have never been peaceful “true” Islamic governments .The Islamics are always looking for more people to enslave ,more resources to steal , after they despoil one people after another they are always looking for the next place to get booty .When Kuwait was invaded in 1990 we should have let Saudis fight that war by themselves .Let them waste their lives and resources fighting instead of letting them use their oil money to export terrorism world wide.

How about the 28 pages he classified to protect the Saudis and hide from the American people the fact that Saudis in the government were involved in the attack. I think there is more to the story than meet the eyes and the real reason Bush invaded Iraq which was not involved in th 9/11 attacks, but SA was. In fact 15 hijackers were from SA.
overman says
There were a lot of lives lost in iraq and a lot of money wasted (a lot made too), but was it wrong? l’m not so sure. Saddam Hussein needed to be removed. lf you look at how many he butchered and tortured it was a good result imo. l believe his goal was to unite all muslim countries into some kind of caliphate (with him as caliph, of course) – God knows where that would have led. He was an imminent danger to the world in my view.
Perhaps, Trump can’t see the whole picture.
vlparker says
Saddam Hussein was a mortal enemy of Iran. Getting rid of Saddam played right into the Iranian Shi’ite hands.
gravenimage says
They are both evil.
vlparker says
Exactly. They are both evil and they were enemies of the US and of each other, so we should have fostered that enmity instead of taking out Saddam.
When you take out a dictator, someone else is going to fill the power vacuum. When you take out a dictator you had better damn well know ahead of time who is going to fill that power vacuum, and whether or not they will be better or worse than the dictator you took out. If you cannot install a pre-picked leader with Western ideals then you should stay the hell out. And since you can count the number of muslims with Western ideals on the fingers of one hand we should have stayed out. Instead, Bush thought these shia muslims were going to ignore 1400 years of shia-sunni enmity and elect some Gandhi clone.
Bush taking out Saddam and then allowing the Iraqis to vote for their new government guaranteed a Shia government, since Iraqis are mostly Shi’ites. And since Iran is shia it guaranteed that Iraq and Iran would go from enemies to allies. The man was totally inept at being Commander-in-Chief. It was his job to know the history of the people he was dealing with and he failed miserably.
gravenimage says
Bush was hoping to replace Saddam with democracy. He did not understand enough about Islam to realize that this was impossible.

It sure did.
And Al Qaeda’s hands, as well. Osama couldn’t have been happier.
Bush’s immediately making a worldwide rockstar of Bin Laden by crediting him for 9/11 was also a big shot in the arm for Al Qaeda.
So Bush blames a Sunni (OBL) for 9/11, and then goes after a Shi’a (Saddam Hussein) for it.
Brilliant.
And to think that not one Cheney (Bush) Admin chickenhawk was ever jailed for this disastrous invasion.
And what a mess we are now, and will continue to be, in for a long, long time because of it, and the ongoing, open hijra it ignited and facilitated.

The whole thing never made sense to me. Sadam was no angel, but he was not responsible for 9/11. 15/19 hijackers were from SA and were sponsored by SA, hence the 28 pages of the Findings on 9/11 which showed SA involvement in the attacks that t Bush classified and hid from the American people to protect the Saudis his close oil buddies.
I found strange also how FAST the 19 perpetrators were identified right after the attacks. If the authorities knew about them, why didn’t they prevent the attacks???? Was the whole thing an excuse to get rid of Sadam and help SA ? The Saudis were NEVER held accountable to the misery they created to the families of the victims , who were not even allowed to sue them, and to the entire nation , the USA.All the lives lost and the millions gone down the drain for what?
I had the opportunity to talk to a retired soldier who visited Iraq during and after Sadam. He said while Sadam was in power he had control of the country . Iraq was dirty but Sadam was in control. After the invasion he could see the country totally out of control and falling apart…and that’s what we see now, all the violence and mayhem and the minority religions being slaughtered by the terrorists. The violence has spread throughout the region without a strong central government and balance of powers. Sadam kept the mullahs of Iran in check.
Same in Libya, thanks to Obama and Hillary… What a mess these corrupt globalist politicians have caused…As consequence Europe has been invaded by Muslim armies of young men whose plan is to take over the continent and make it a Muslim Caliphate, thanks to the traitor sell out European politicians.
The same has been going on the US thanks to Bush, Hillary, Obama. The US has been invaded by hordes of Muslims on welfare , thousands of Mosques have been built where the man are indoctrinated to hate us infidels and to attack us. Muslim training compounds are spread around the country, and nothing is done as long as the politicians line their pockets with $$$ from ME oil rich nations.
I can’t stand the sight of Bush, Hillary, Obama , liars and traitors…I consider those 3 as snake in the grass..They are responsible for a lot of death and misery to many innocent victims. If there’s a final judgment I’m sure they’ll get theirs.
I hope and pray that Trump won’t get us involved in the mess in Syria as Obama did, giving $$$ and arms to the terrorists with the help of traitors McCain and Lindsey Graham..There are photos of the 2 with the terrorist Al Baghdadi, head of ISIS and others…
Let Syria sort its own mess or the same thing will happen as in Iraq and Libya. Same with other Muslim majority countries in the ME.
That’s my humble opinion…Thanks.

I saw yesterday a bit of an interview with the king of Jordan asking for HELP for the Palestinian refugees. They are 20 % of the population in Jordan. He was asking for help from other nations.
The so called Palestinians get millions from the whole world and nothing changes…all the $$$ goes for arms and I’m sure for the pockets of the politicians so they can blame Israel for their misery. Do they produce anything or only live from sucking the wealth of other nations???
King Hussein, the father of the present king, had problems with the Palestinian refugees who wanted to take over the country and they had a civil war, Black September. Hussein asked for help to fight the Palestinians who had made a state inside Jordan and were causing a lot of violence against the people.
Maybe the present king sees the same danger as the numbers of Palestinians grow.. They’ll always be refugees -since 1948……. 69 years…so they can continue sucking money from other countries while playing the victim card.

The disaster that IS currently the Middle East started when GHW BUSH invaded Kuwait to remove the Iraq military. This was the first time the US had ever went to war to save an autocratic nation. We know the REAL reason was GHW Bush did not want Iraq invading Saudi Arabia where their financial interests were… The Carlisle Group and their Gulf Oil Ventures. Had GHW Bush never invaded Kuwait 9/11 may never have happened. As for GW Bush in Afghanistan… the Russians were in Afghanistan for 10 years and really did not accomplish much and remember the Russians are very brutal in war. Anyone with good sense should have known a ground war would never be successful. What GW Bush should have done was carpet bombed Afghanistan with the B-52’s 24/7 for 6 months until nothing was left but a pile of rubble. Iraq was under control with a no-fly zone… GW Bush invaded Iraq because Saddam Hussein tried to assassinate his father GHW Bush. What most Americans fail to realize… these Muslims will never live a democracy as they are not civilized like the western world and need brutal dictator to keep them in line.

I disagree. The lesson that we learned after the fall of the Berlin Wall was that terrorist groups like the Baader Meinhof Gang had been operating with impunity because they were able to duck into East Germany whenever they wanted as a subsidized safe space. They were easily apprehended when the the wall fell. Same was true of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and Taliban Afghanistan. They provided safe spaces for international terrorist groups, as did Idi Amin’s Uganda earlier with the hijackers at Entebbe. In fact, Saddam Hussein was involved in the 1993 attempted bombing of the World Trade Center. And, Bin Laden said in interviews that he attacked because he saw how we always withdrew when attacked and he would have kept going but for the unexpected response after 9/11. Here’s corrobration of the first statement. “PB: We talked to bin Laden directly about his motivations about what he was planning to do. We didn’t know 9/11 was going to be the outcome, but he’s been pretty consistent. His analysis after his involvement in the Afghan War against the Soviets, was that we were kind of weak and a paper tiger. He based that on our withdrawal from Vietnam, our withdrawal from Beirut in 1983 after the attacks on the Marine barracks and our withdrawal from Mogadishu after the Black Hawk Down incident.” https://www.history.com/news/the-long-winding-road-to-911 I read the second somewhere else.

Actually the war in Iraq was a success, of course it was a false flag, the US government, including the CIA knew Saudi Arabia was responsible for 9/11 and for sponsoring global jihad, but they could not go to war with them and effect the oil trade, so they made up a fictitious story about WMD’s in Iraq, the intelligence services knew from the first gulf war that Iraq was a tinderbox of Sunni power and Shia dissent, so they invaded it with the intention of given it to the Shia, who are the Saudis most hated enemy, since then the Saudis have being focused on overthrowing the Shia in Iraq, Syria and Yemen at great expense and the USA profits from arms sales as well as preventing the Saudis from continuing with attacks on western targets, look at Saudi now, it owes a fortune to the IMF, which is ironic because theiruran dictates that no true muslims should perform usury (loaning and paying interest), the Kurds have also gained independence from their Sunni Arab overlords, so its a win, win, win for all but the Saudis, who now most rue the day they pissed off the USA and are now close to bankruptsy

It definitely scores high on the mark of worst mistakes made by our nation. We could go back to the decision to allow Muslims into our nation in the first place. It took only one generation after coming to the US in large numbers for Muslims to begin blowing us up and waging Jihad by sword and pen.
One might go back to Colonel William Eddy accepting the terms from the Saudi “We will use your iron but you will leave our faith alone.” That tolerance and the fact that we fund that principle export that we agreed to leave alone are pretty high on that list as well.
Yes a long line of mistakes going back before anyone was around and always in the wrong direction. Perhaps Trump could make a few decisions to reverse the trend.
