There is no doubt that whenever we leave Afghanistan, if we ever actually do, al-Qaeda and the Taliban will claim victory. So we could stay there forever in order to try to prevent that, or we could reconfigure our strategy with a focus on containment and making sure they can’t export their jihad out of Afghanistan again. With wide-open borders, that’s going to be tough.
Meanwhile, is CNN publishing this article in order to try to goad Biden’s handlers into staying in Afghanistan even longer, in a futile attempt to save face? It probably wouldn’t be too difficult to persuade them.
Also, there is no doubt that the useless waste of American resources in Afghanistan has sapped the strength of the American economy, with absolutely nothing to show for all the lives lost and trillions wasted.
“Al Qaeda promises ‘war on all fronts’ against America as Biden pulls out of Afghanistan,” by Nic Robertson and Saleem Mehsud, CNN, April 30, 2021:
…America’s “war on terror” is about to enter a new phase as President Joe Biden prepares to withdraw all US forces from Afghanistan by the 20th anniversary of 9/11, but now al Qaeda claims its war with America is far from over.
In an exclusive interview with CNN conducted through intermediaries, two al Qaeda operatives tell CNN that “war against the US will be continuing on all other fronts unless they are expelled from the rest of the Islamic world.”
In the past al Qaeda has rarely responded to questions, choosing instead to hide behind its own self-serving propaganda, dodging even the most distant scrutiny. It’s unclear why the group has chosen to do so now.
Terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank, editor-in-chief of West Point’s CTC Sentinel, who reviewed al Qaeda’s answers, says it is possible “they feel buoyed by the Biden administration’s decision to pull out troops from Afghanistan, but they may also be seeking to deflect attention from the many recent losses.”…
In its response to CNN, two members of al Qaeda’s subcontinent broadcast branch heap praise on the Taliban for keeping the fight against America alive. “Thanks to Afghans for the protection of comrades-in-arms, many such jihadi fronts have been successfully operating in different parts of the Islamic world for a long time,” the spokesperson says….
Somewhat ambiguously, al Qaeda also claims no interest in using Afghanistan itself as a launch pad for future attacks because it no longer needs it. “It did not need Afghanistan and there is no such intention in the future,” the group says. However, as Cruickshank points out, “a statement of intent from an anonymous operative is hardly binding on the group.”
Terror group eclipsed by ISIS
In its reply to CNN al Qaeda declares Afghanistan its victory. “The Americans are now defeated,” and draw a parallel to the Soviet Union’s withdrawal three decades ago from the country and its subsequent collapse: “The US war in Afghanistan played key role in hitting US economy.”
That line echoes the rhetoric of bin Laden himself, who promoted the oversimplified idea that the Soviets bankrupted themselves in Afghanistan. The cost of the US wars on terror has reached into the trillions, but the 9/11 attacks did not bring on US economic collapse. Al Qaeda admits the toll the war has taken on them, saying it sent “most” al Qaeda central fighters to Syria where “some of them have been martyred in recent years.”…
In recent years ISIS’s atrocities and attacks it inspired in Europe have all but eclipsed al Qaeda. But the latter presents this as a “tactical silence,” claiming it is not “broken” and is instead “fighting a long war” with “different stages.”…
Today al Qaeda appears proud of its influence over the TTP. “Now the organization of Pakistani Taliban and their leadership not only moving forward in the light of Sharia but also making better decisions based on past experiences and recent successes have been made possible by the same unity and adherence to Sharia and Wisdom.”…
If the Taliban is as close to al Qaeda as that group claims, and the UN assesses, then AQ’s 2,000-word communication with CNN implies that rather being ceasefire partners with the US, the Taliban is as close to abetting al Qaeda in war against America as it ever was.
Al Qaeda is making clear the country that was once its base to plan the deadliest-ever attack on American soil is free for it to use again. “The United States is not a problem for our Afghan brothers, but due to the sacrifices in the Afghan war, the Americans are now defeated. Whether Republicans or Democrats — both have made final decision to pull out from the Afghan war.”
If the Taliban keeps its promises to Biden, then all this is just al Qaeda propaganda, but if it doesn’t, all bets about the future threat it poses are off.
Infidel says
The only country that ever ‘won’ in Afghanistan were Genghiz Khan’s Mongols in the 13th century. Much of Afghanistan was under the Qhwarezmid sultanate centered in Samarqand, and when that ruler kept executing Genghiz’s envoys who wanted peace and trade, the Mongols, after a year long preparation, invaded Qhwarezm and pioneered their scorched earth policy, burning all farmland around a city before besieging it and massacring its inhabitants. They did that w/ Samarqand, Qonyeurgench and Herat, Herat being particularly noteworthy. The Qhwarezmid ruler fled from pillar to post, until he was murdered somewhere in Iran
All those tactics would be considered war crimes today, and non-starters in any military preparation (unless the Chicoms were to do them, which would be different). So the idea that the US can win in Afghanistan w/o forcibly de-islamizing them is a fantasy
Just have a minimal agreement w/ the Taliban – that no matter what they do, they can’t harbor jihadists who plot attacks against the West (and throw in India, since it’s a Quad member). In return for that, the West will look the other way as the Taliban rolls back the laws on women, freedom of religion and everything else (allowing non-muslims to flee to India). We’ve proved over 20 years that we can’t civilize that country, and can quit trying
Frank Anderson says
With respect and courtesy to you, any agreement between believers and non-believers is useless, meaningless and good only for so long as the believers find it useful. It is a total waste of time, energy and opportunity to conduct sham negotiations with someone who lives to kill or enslave you.
william says
RS says in his article above, “If the Taliban keeps its promises”. We know from reports that they are not keeping their promises even now, and their promises are worthless; as are those of the Mullahs in Iran and all Islamic states and entities that are hostile tot eh West
Infidel says
By ‘believers’, I assume you’re referring to islam believers: agreements b/w Christians and Buddhists, or Hindus and Shintos, or Jews and Shamanists – all would work out pretty well!
Frank Anderson says
I., you understand my thought perfectly. Which religious group teaches for 1400 year that lying whenever advantage can be obtained is encouraged, not just tolerated or permitted? And which groups (plural) teach that lying is contrary to all they stand for?
mortimer says
Agree with FA: the Taliban does not respect any treaty with a kafir and for the Taliban, even other Muslims are also ‘kafirs’.
The Taliban ideology is the problem.
Ideological warfare is the only thing that will defeat the Taliban.
gravenimage says
Spot on, Frank. As soon as we pull out the Taliban is going to move in.
william says
What I cannot understand is why the Afghan army after so much training and armed by the US Military, are so ineffective against the Taliban. The Afghans are supposed to be warriors surely the warrior spirit is not confined to the Taliban.
Infidel says
Just lazy. Why work when they can get US to do things for them? That’s another reason why this withdawal should be expedited: it’ll force them to step up and take control. Or if they’re so inclined, switch sides
gravenimage says
william, the problem is that few in the Afghan army actually oppose the Taliban in any fundamental way. After all, they are almost all pious Muslims just like the Taliban, so any defense against them is going to be half-hearted at best.
Infidel says
Well, yes & no. Before we entered Afghanistan in 2001, there was a civil war going on, almost won by the Taliban, where the Taliban represented one ethnic group, the Pashtuns, while the others – Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks & Turkmen – all had their own, and there may have been some Pashtun militias opposed to the Taliban. That might well be what ends up happening once we withdraw, and it’s just as well
Like Hugh often used to say, the best outcome for us infidels is for those countries to be mired in a perpetual civil war where no combatant emerges on top. Only that will force the locals to consider the deleterious effects of islam. Or not!
Just keep an eye on whether that country becomes a training ground for jihadists. I personally doubt it: Pakistan today is far more lawless than Afghanistan is
gravenimage says
This is true, Infidel. There are indeed some ethnic, tribal, and religious minorities like the Shia Hazara who are opposed to the Taliban on this basis.
My point was that most Afghans are pious Muslims, and have no problem with Shari’ah itself. They either support the Taliban or some rival faction with very similar goals.
Infidels, “secular” Muslims, and “moderate” Muslims are pretty darn thin on the ground there.
gravenimage says
Al-Qaeda: ‘The Americans are now defeated. The US war in Afghanistan played key role in hitting US economy.’
There is no doubt that whenever we leave Afghanistan, if we ever actually do, al-Qaeda and the Taliban will claim victory.
………………
This is true. Cut our losses and get out now.
It is not possible to civilize Afghanistan.
mortimer says
It’s not ‘Afghanistan’ that is hard to civilize, it’s Islam itself. They leave when the manmade Koran is exposed as being of human origin.
gravenimage says
Mortimer, right now Afghanistan is virtually 100% Muslim.
Afghanistan cannot be civilized because Islam cannot be civilized.
And pious Muslims are not apt to leave Islam.
Clifford Fodor says
They made it part of their Constitution. That’s when we lost the war in Afghanistan.
gravenimage says
True, Clifford. The Afghan Constitution is based on Islam–so this can never be a civilized nation under these conditions. (Islam is likely too strong an influence there in any case–but this ensures that things are hopeless).
Frank Anderson says
GI, I think there is merit to the argument “fight there or fight here”. They are NEVER going to stop fighting as “true believers” in the final, perfect, complete and unchangeable criminal conspiracy which is also a religion. Any reading of honored RS’s work or any other of many knowledgeable sources shows to anyone who can read, write and understand the English language that islam is devoted to slaughter and conquest. There will be no peace as long as islam exists.
I was very happy to see Spencer and Warner talking. Two of the great teachers. “A twofold cord is strong; but a threefold cord is not easily broken.”
gravenimage says
Frank, so long as we continue to allow Muslims into the West, I’m afraid we are going to be fighting them here, whatever our foreign policy.
Very much agree with you about Spencer and Warner–both great Anti-Jihadists.
Frank Anderson says
I suggest based on experience since 9/11 that islam cannot be isolated as long as it exists. Remember the “American Taliban”? Islam did not go to him; he went to islam. The delusion of reprieve can help if there is no other way to deal with living in a death camp. But we are not in a death camp until we surrender to islam as though it is inevitable. Dale Carnegie taught from his many collected statements of wisdom, to cooperate with the inevitable. Islam is not inevitable as long as people are prepared to resist..
gravenimage says
Frank, I agree that in these times of rapid communication that Islam cannot be completely isolated–but I still hold that it can be largely isolated.
The mere fact that just a single thug is known as “the American Taliban” is telling. (Apparently five Americans tried to join the Taliban in 2009 but were unsuccessful. I was never able to find out if they were converts to Islam or not).
First we have to stop importing Muslims–so long as we do, there willl be more Jihad here–and more converts to Islam, as well. Conversion to Islam–save perhaps for Black Amerericans converting to the NOI–was quite rare in the west before 9/11.
Not inviting in Muslims for flight training would also be a good idea.
Then, we should be deporting Jihadists–you do find some of this, but it should be much more widespread.
And we have not been able to civilize Afghanistan–they now have *stoning* back on the books. Sadly, this is what Americans are fighting and dying for.
And it would be much the same with any other Muslim nation if we tried to civilize them, too.
Frank Anderson says
GI, as long as we accept that we have 1 basic choice, to fight or surrender, and understand that surrender means death or slavery, we agree on your propositions.
I will spare you my long and tiresome story of my futile effort to just move on after I was destroyed. My effort at appeasement did not work. Whenever I tried to find another job (in the present case peaceful refuge),, bad references (in the present case believers and terrorists) would make certain that I remained unemployed (in danger) to this day, starting in 1982. Believers are no less determined to impose their will than the corrupt, evil people who destroyed my life and family. I remember the line from high school English literature (?) “Cowards die many times; The valiant taste of death but once.” Having been a coward and lost everything once, I have no intention of repeating my error.
I hope you see my sincere friendship and respect.
Phil Copson says
“…. The delusion of reprieve can help if there is no other way to deal with living in a death camp. But we are not in a death camp until we surrender to islam as though it is inevitable….”
—————————————————————————————
GI comments on how the phrase “the American Taliban” entered the public realm: Regarding your analogy of “living in a death camp”, maybe the single most useful thing that anyone in the media could do, would be to make the public aware of the Islamic phrase “Dar Al-Harb” and realise that – so far as Islam is concerned – we are “living in the House of War”.
Frank Anderson says
P.C. it took me a while to distinguish 2 particular converts. John Walker Lindh, if I remember was called the American Taliban. There was also Adam Gadahn who was originally a Jewish American who became a senior speaker for the Taliban. Having been present in the local Jewish community for more than 20 years until I started asking questions about islam, I can see from the standard local Jewish treatment of islam why it would be seen favorably for some to convert.
My Rabbi and friend for more than 20 years exploded in my face when I questioned his Pollyana views of islam, based on his course in Rabbinical school taught by an imam. “Imam’s don’t lie!” The Rabbi refused violently to follow the Jewish wisdom of asking every question repeatedly, even to the very existence of God. Five years ago I decided it was better to leave the community. Self-defeat and self-destruction are not available options.
James Lincoln says
Frank Anderson says,
“Having been a coward and lost everything once, I have no intention of repeating my error.”
This has to be a typo, Frank.
One thing is for certain:
You are NOT a coward.
You are a very brave, moral, and ethical patriot!
Frank Anderson says
The first step to dealing with any problem is to recognize and admit it exists. When I was fired for refusing to assist in stealing 200 million dollars of 1982 present value, and blackballed out of being employed at all for roughly 2 years, I had no resources or legal experience to fight. It took about 10 years total of warfare in corrupt courts to have a chance. Everything that could be done was done to make me feel useless and worthless, including the influence of my adopted mother and ex-wife.
My ex-wife could be one of the very best nurses ever to walk into a hospital, with highest credentials in may areas of nursing, including mental health. SHE KNEW everything she could do to help or harm, and chose to harm. I let her because I had no obvious choice to fight. After years of unemployment, literally digging ditches, sweeping floors and cleaning garbage, my adopted mother died leaving me the money I used to go back to college a third time. There I met 4 lawyers who helped me get where I am today. NEVER AGAIN. There is no point in anyone repeating my experience. If you can, see if you can find my article When to Keep Silent: An Alternative to Whistleblowing on Lexis. IT IS NOT HYPOTHETICAL.
James Lincoln says
Frank Anderson,
I understand, Frank. What you went through was truly horrific – and your advice on this matter is truly sound.
And I’m sure that you know that whistleblowers have actually received death threats. I’m sure that you are aware of Jeffrey Stephen Wigand, the American biochemist and former vice president of research and development at Brown & Williamson who blew the whistle on tobacco tampering at the company.
He received death threats – and was dragged through hell…
Frank Anderson says
James, I received not only threats, but attempts. Will never be able to be unprepared. They know there is a Doomsday Machine that will deal with them if I am eliminated.
gravenimage says
Dear Frank,
I don’t consider isolating Islam–to the extent that this is possible–to be appeasement or surrendering to Islam. Just the opposite, in fact.
And I am so sorry about what you have gone through in your own life–but glad that you have been abe to apply this to the fight against Islam. Many–especially those who suffered in their professional or personal lives–just wouldn’t care about the danger from Islam, or would be distracted from it.
And I always appreciate your replies, Frank,. Generally our disagreements, if any, are small ones. We are all trying to Work out the best strategies for dealing with the threat of Islam.
Frank Anderson says
GI, I have paid dearly to learn what I have. You may be able to read between the lines to see one of the reasons I write as candidly as I do is for someone with whom I have had no contact since Christmas Day, 1994, when he made clear I was not worth knowing. I would love to have my adopted father’s and my uncle’s writing comparable to mine. They were extraordinarily good men without being perfect. My official adopted father died in 1959 and uncle in 1980. My memories are sparse and getting dim. My writing here is my “message in a bottle” in hope that some day it will be read by the person I wish.
I love teachings from many good sources. One of those teachings you have seen me share several times comes from a place where I am no longer welcome: Grandson to grandfather-Why are you planting walnut trees when it takes 70 years to make walnuts? Grandfather to grandson-So that your grandson will have walnuts. Do we want our grandchildren to live in terror, slavery and misery or freedom, opportunity and liberty?
And then from the Catholic source when I could turn on our first television in the early 1950’s: It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. We are in very dark times and facing much darker. But, if we think this is bad, it is time to read Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. We can avoid that calamity if we try.
gravenimage says
Frank, far from cowardly appeasing you took an ethical stand. I’m so sorry this took such a toll on you–but I greatly respect your having done it.

Reply to FA:
The United States Army has 40 military installations in Germany, two of which are scheduled to close. Over 220 others have already been closed, mostly following the end of the Cold War in the 1990s.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Tuesday that he is expanding the U.S. military presence in Germany by 500 troops and has stopped planning for large-scale troop cuts ordered by the Trump administration.
“This planned increase in U.S. personnel underscores our commitment to Germany and the entire NATO alliance,” Austin said in a notable counterpoint to the Trump administration’s repeated complaints that Germany is a weak partner on defense and security.
Frank Anderson says
Friend Mortimer, as long as Germany is paying one man, 4 wives and 20 children over 300,000 dollars a year in welfare benefits and far less for its defense needs than agreed and needed, it is not just a weak, but a lousy and burdensome partner for alliance.
Please consider the duties of partners in a legal partnership, simply defined in the law as an association of two or more persons for profit (benefit). The partners have a legally recognized fiduciary duty to deal honestly and responsibly with each other. My first and only office partnership lasted less than a year. My partner promised not to smoke in the office because I have lifelong really bad lungs. He smoked 3 packages of cigarettes a day where I could count them by his beating them before opening. He promised to share the work in addition to the benefit. But I deposited 85 percent of the money to his 15. I figured if I could make 85 percent and give him half. I could make 100 and give him nothing. I have never regretted ending that burden.
The US was under no delusions after WWII of Germany’s weak economic condition, in contrast to the insane policies rampant after WWI. But those weak conditions are long in the past. When Germany welcomes several million parasite invaders and pays them lavishly, there is no sense in US supporting that waste.
James Lincoln says
Frank Anderson says,
“When Germany welcomes several million parasite invaders and pays them lavishly, there is no sense in US supporting that waste.”
Perfectly stated, my compliments.
mortimer says
My point: military bases not just in Germany, Japan, Philippines, Turkey, but also Guantanamo, Cuba. The US will need a military base in Afghastlistan as burdensome as it is. The bases prevent worse things from happening.
The Taliban must continually be degraded or it’s growth will be unchecked.
Frank Anderson says
Mortimer, I agree that we are going to see bad days for a long time. I suggest that bases in Afghanistan are bullet magnets, cut off by hateful enemies like Pakistan and Iran from the support a base (or bases) needs. Consider the poor position of Corregidor when the Philippines fell to the Japanese. That is the kind of situation US and Allied personnel would be in with the present decision to end effective WAR and Combat.
Consider the French experience at Dien Bien Phu: A base surrounded by enemy forces with all the weapons and time they wanted to make a deadly example of brave soldiers. In Vietnam there were several bases used as magnets to draw the enemy into combat where major US artillery was in range and B-52’s rained thousands of tons of bombs. What could be done FOR a base, or a few bases in Afghanistan? Where are the “Big Belly” B-52’s that could carry 108 750 pound bombs per trip? They are gone. We do have C-130’s, C-17″ and C-5’s that can carry MOAB’s that release the equivalent of small nuclear bombs without the radioactive fallout. But do you think they would be used in a free-fire manner as was done in Vietnam?
There is no halfway in Afghanistan, The US decided to lose that war when it refused to kill the opium production which funds the drug lords and Taliban. Taking out a bad guy here and there only aids recruitment of more bad guys. Only by killing faster than they can be replaced is there any prospect of victory; and we do not have the stomach for that level of slaughter. We will when the combat reaches our country. Given the border situation, that should develop much sooner than later.

Good posts, Frank.

The Islamist Turkish leadership also wants NATO to continue to stay in Afghanistan and pay for the development of an Afghan Islamist economy:
“Given the vastness of the problems in Afghanistan and the fact that further deterioration of political stability and socio-economic conditions can cause the resurrection of even more dangerous armed extremist groups, the international community should find a way to continue its presence in this country.”

Any pimp would say the same to his working girls: “Even more dangerous extremist pimps will appear, if you do not stay with me, and take care for me since I love you and hand over your hard earned money to me.
Best thing is to cut the girls (US and NATO) loose from the criminal pimp, or in this case the Islamist goons.

The afghans should have used the Beirut 1983 strategy as soon as these racist USA occupiers entered their land. The US murderers would have been driven out in 30 days or less. 20 years of occupation and nothing to show for it but false drone attacks, government puppets and no development. Thanks all folks!!

Never mind that the US entered Lebanon to prevent violence against the Lebanese people, and saved Afghanistan from the Taliban.
But Sabri S. relishes such violence, and is enraged that Muslims are not stoning women in the streets–he has in fact laudes such savagery.
Of course he does not consider the savage Taliban to be murderers–he loves killing in the name of Islam, and believes that all Muslims have the right to slaughter Infidels.
And there is little development in Afghanistan because Islam itself retards any innovation–but that is how Sabri S. likes it.
mortimer says
Sabri S. (‘s’ stands for ‘savage’) is both a violence-loving savage and an opportunist. It isn’t ‘savagery’ if his side does it.

Fine, let China have them. Actually, this is one country that can succeed where the Soviets and US failed, since they’d have no compunctions about harvesting the organs of those they take captive, leveling their cities, converting their mosques into restrooms and so forth. And if they don’t, at least it’ll wear down the PLA to a point that they’re not only no threat to us, but wouldn’t be able to continue to suppress Tibet, Xinjiang, HK and other places

This is very true. In VS Naipaul’s book “Beyond Belief” Indonesian Muslim “Islamist” Imaduddin was in the US in the 1980s at university and in danger if he returned. Caring Americans at the college scrambled to fix things with immigration so he could stay, and then since he was no longer being sponsored by the Indonesian government and had no money they arranged first tutoring and then a formal teaching position so that he could live in comfort.
Naipaul asked if he was grateful to the many non-Muslims who had helped him, he just grinned and said “God has been good to me”.
No thanks for the “filthy Infidels”–and no wondering over why we have such civilized societies where students are not in danger of being murdered by their own govenment. As he saw it, “Allah” just arranged for some “neutral” territory where he could wait things out until Indonesia itself further Islamized and welcomed him back.

I was 100% against the invasion of Afghanistan, a country most Americans couldnt find on a World Map, and yet were sold a bill of goods that this far away country was.at least, partly responsible for 9/11, when most of the Hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and not a single one of them was Afghani..
Some guy sitting in a Cave high in the Hindu Kush Mountains planned one of the most speculator attacks in History, similar to Pearl Harbor, and yet nobody knew it was in the works is rather hard to believe, however no matter, as that is all water under the bridge, and here we are today all these years later.
I told people in the States 20 years ago that invading that country will make the mess in Vietnam look like a walk in the Park… I hope some of those folks remembered my words as I told them you will be in there for 20 years at least…and here we are 20 years later….
Old Slow Joe will take the credit for pulling Troops out of Afghanistan, however at the last minute he, or Ms Nasty P, will claim we cant do that as ” We are leaving our friends behind”, like she said when Trump took Troops out of Syria.
Bring ALL US Troops home to protect America and fuck the rest of the World, let them take care of their own shit. Why should young America Soldiers die far away from Home in countries that have zero to do with what America stands for and believes in?. President Trump said, “We cannot be the Policeman of the World”… The Industrial War Machine didnt care much for that statement and so they shoved money into the Biden campaign and followed the orders of CNN as The Masters Of War…
Why is the USA defending countries around the World and yet its thought of as being racist, or fascist, for the USA to protect their own Southern Border….Am I missing something here?.

There *are* times when it makes sense to take a stand in the world–our defeating Fascism is one of the most obvious examples.

A big step to containment of jihad and to stop them exporting terror to the West would be to stop importing people from those countries. It’s simple and wouldn’t cost us money. In fact, it would save us money by not having to pay welfare costs to look after them once they get into Western countries. Not allowing them to peddle hard drugs when they do come here would also deny them much funding for their jihad.

Ok the woke left see’s war as only we send some people over there to do something to some other people. The some people we send over are expendable in their opinion because they were dumb enough to sign up. We can’t win wars when the liberal left see’s the killing of civilians in the enemies country as a criminal act. If you want to win and protect our troops you can’t tie their hands behind their back. The U.S.A. has the technology and military power to defeat Afghanistan we only need the will to do so. If we are not going to go to war with the idea of winning we should NOT go at all. We can destroy Afghanistan from the air, and that means you bomb the hell out of them rather than just striking military targets. You have to break not only their military you have to break the will of the population to continue the fight.
Afghanistan has defeated the will of the American people to continue this fight after 20 yrs. of our selective fighting. So yes Al-Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan can claim a victory.
