This is nice, although I do wonder where and how Mormons are mistreating Muslims in the first place. Also: where is the pamphlet published by an Islamic group helping them understand and treat Mormons better? Right: such a pamphlet does not exist, and will not exist. The outreach and dialogue always and in every case only goes in one direction, and yet no one ever seems to notice or care. Muslim Brotherhood theorist Sayyid Qutb explained: “The chasm between Islam and Jahiliyyah [the society of unbelievers] is great, and a bridge is not to be built across it so that the people on the two sides may mix with each other, but only so that the people of Jahiliyyah may come over to Islam.” Dialogue, in other words, is a means of dawah, Islamic proselytizing, not a genuine discussion or exchange.
“Official new pamphlet aims to help Latter-day Saints understand, treat Muslims better,” by Tad Walch, Deseret News, January 20, 2022:
A new 35-page pamphlet called “Muslims and Latter-day Saints: Beliefs, Values, and Lifestyles” appeared online Wednesday on websites and apps of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Why it matters: Muslim and Latter-day Saint leaders work together across the world because of their shared values. Latter-day Saint leaders have said they want church members to better understand Muslims, work and live together with them and help root out bias against Islam.
- The pamphlet’s publication was first announced in October at a BYU conference on Islam. Learning more about Muslim neighbors “will help us be more kind and more accurate in what we say and feel about each other,” Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said at the time.
- Elder David A. Bednar of the Twelve used the conference to repudiate all disparaging statements made by Latter-day Saints about Muslims, including those that repeated stereotypes. He called stereotypes wrong and offensive: “Such biases cause those who feel that way to overlook the kindness and goodness of the overwhelming majority of all Muslims,” he said.
- Elder Bednar said the booklet was produced over several years with the help of Muslim imams.
Shared values: The pamphlet outlines common values held by the two faiths. “Both Latter-day Saints and Muslims have sincerely held beliefs like faith in God, prophets, scriptures and holy places,” Elder Bednar said. Common ground includes:
- Foundational belief in an omniscient and omnipotent God, and adherents express their faith in him through thought, word and action.
- Prophets provide vital guidance from God.
- Jesus Christ plays an important, though different, role for both groups.
- Revelation from God given through messengers as scripture is the foundation for learning God’s will, keeping commitments and participating in faithful worship.
- Human beings must communicate with God through daily prayer.
- Fasting promotes spiritual growth and temporal well-being and brings faithful members closer to God.
- God delights in purity and chastity.
- Women are valued and are essential in society and in the home.
- Family is the fundamental unit of society and an essential source of joy….

This was explained beautifully my 1966-67 senior year in military school, getting us prepared for potential service. Soviet style negotiation takes the firm, unalterable, “final, complete, perfect and unchangeable” stance that “What is mine, is mine. Only what is yours is negotiable.” Fools who do not understand this continues with all islam for 1400 years know nothing about its teachings, practice and goals. Spencer’s frequent quote about the results of the blind following the blind continues to be important. All of my local Mormon friends know better and govern themselves accordingly. Many candles need to be lit.

Well said.
I find it uncanny that the same carnal promises in the afterlife are parallel in Islam and the LDS church. They have the same distortion of who and what Jesus says he was. For example, women are not equal to men spiritually, both get to invite their earthly wives to heaven (if they are worthy), one gets 72 virgins and the other gets an entire planet to populate, and more.

then again suicide of the western economy is being promoted as well by the green energy plans that have been agreed….
the europeans particularly have fallen for the dream of multiculturalism and the illusions of diversity and has been dragged to suicide by opening to islamic migration….
the question is how christian these people really are when they are being directed to suicide even if they dont know it….

If I am not mistaken, the Mormon Church OFFICIALLY proclaims Mohammed a legitimate prophet, contra any other Christian sect (and yes I realize that this is assuming here Mormonism is a Christian sect, which many Christians dispute, though not being a Christian myself I note all this from an outsider’s viewpoint).
As awful as Vatican II (1962-1965) was for the Roman Catholic Church (N.B., it effectively killed off the old Catholic Church, which is never coming back, and what a waste this has been) it didn’t go as far as the Mormons have by officially recognizing Mo as a true prophet. Per Mormonthink, this is stupid and foolhardy beyond all measure and, if I am correct here, shame on the Church of Jesus Christ for Latter Day Saints or by whatever name they prefer.
Well, if you can buy into the Joseph Smith and Brigham Young “yarns,” then accepting Mo as a real prophet should surprise no one. Sorry if I am coming across as too skeptical. It is my nature to be skeptical and I agree with Carl Sagan that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Virtually all religions produce extraordinary claims but never provide the extraordinary evidence. They then threaten eternal damnation for not accepting the extraordinary claims. This is unethical and a major reason why I remain a skeptic into old age. I take nothing on faith. Nothing. I not only desire proof, I demand it. It is my right.
In any case, shame on the Mormons. They’re barking up a very bogus theological tree.
Frank Anderson says
W, there is good reason to support your contentions. Some will agree; and others will disagree. I am grateful we can have our opinions in a free society, for now.
Wellington says
Thank you, Frank. And I don’t mind at all those who dispute my convictions and opinions. That is their right (and besides, they could be correct and I wrong).
What I do mind are any who want to harm me for having the convictions and opinions that I do and here I find Christians and Jews (Hindus, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists, et al.) as allies in this arguably noble stance but, of course, I find the decrepit and control-freakish Islamic sphere of mankind definitely against me in this regard and so to Hell with that “sphere” in its entirety and why EVERY willing adult Muslim should hang his or her head in shame.
mortimer says
Reply to Wellington: If Joseph Smith though Mohammed was a prophet, it would be because he was consciously copying him. To be sure, any opinions regarding the origins or the original teachings of Mormonism are controversial, because they have been progressively reformed and even suppressed because many of the original teachings are very embarrassing.
However, it is easy to find MANY PARALLELS between MOHAMMED and Joseph Smith, such as polygamy and racism.

Buddha, in his last sermon, asked his disciples to be a ‘lamp unto themselves’. And to test whatever he said with their own experience and only accept what resonated. This makes sense and is similar to Advaita Vedanta and experiencing the truth rather than believing what is being told by tradtion/religion.
This should be the norm in any sensible society.
Hope you are doing well in these times, Wellington.

Wellington,
to a Christian, the Bible is the Book. To a mormon, the book of mormon is the book. They may claim the Bible, but their own book from their own ‘prophet’ comes first with them. I know. I have spoken with more than two. They visit in twos.
I have read their book. The guy attempted to write as the Bible was written (by many men over the course of many years, so it is not as it would be if written by just one), but he failed miserably. and much of it is just plain stupid.
Wellington says
As an agnostic, somehistory, I assure you I will never place the Book of Mormon over the Bible. Here I think we are in complete agreement.
And the “matter” remains about Mormons treating Mohammed as some kind of legitimate prophet. What an error and it only redounds in the negative about Mormonism. Mormons need to change this as much as they had to change their take on the races back in the 1970’s.
somehistory says
You may be agnostic, but you make a great defense of Christianity, better even than some “believers,” Wellington.
Yes, accepting the fake, perhaps just an evil figment of an evil mind, ‘prophet’ does not speak well for them.
A personal experience, if I may. I once knew a young widowed father of two little boys. We had several discussions over time concerning the Bible. He told me once that he had been visited by mormons. He listened to what they had to say and they said they would be back. they wanted him to take their book.
He wanted to know from me whether he should take it when they returned.
His reason for asking me: He said that when he talked to me about the Bible, he felt “good.” But when they visited him, he felt a lot different.
After I gave him a kind of preview of the book based on my reading of it, and what mormons believe, he told me later on that he informed them “no” on the book and ‘no’ on further visits.
I think most of those who go out on their two years of visiting mean well. I just believe that they have been terribly mislead.
Peter Burrows says
Somehistory – I couldn’t agree more. It reads like science fiction. I was once visited by two “sisters,” the female equivalent of Elders, one of whom asked who I thought wrote “The Book of Mormon.” When I said Joseph Smith, she sad, “Oh, no!” and proceeded to fervently tell me that it was impossible for a human being to have written such a magnificent work of devotion — blah blah blah. Now, that’s something they DO have in common with Islam: their holy book is word for word revelation from God/Allah, that, plus blind faith..
somehistory says
thank you, Peter Burrows, for the confirmation about their book.

I read the Book of Mormon. It is quite tedious (albeit not nearly as ugly as the Qur’an). The idea that no human can write like this is sadly mistaken.

Technically, Wellington, Mormons consider Muhammad a “great and inspired teacher”, instead of an actual prophet. But they clearly have enormous respect for him, and Joseph Smith called himself “a second Muhammad”. I have not seen Mormons say just what it is about Muhammad’s savagery they consider “great and inspired”. But early on the LDS certainly embraced a lot of behavior that was disturbingly Islamic in character.
Wellington says
Thanks for clarifying that, gravenimage. Well, seems it pretty much adds up to the same thing. Any admiration for Mohammed, especially when meant in a religious way, is evidence of confusion of mind of the highest order. Might as well praise Satan as praise Mohammed.

Agreed, Wellington.

My first impression of Mormons in any literature came from the Sherlock Holmes book ‘A Study in Scarlet’, where the 2 victims of the murder Holmes was investigating were Mormons. In the second half of the book, it’s described how those 2 forcibly captured and married the girl that their future killer was betrothed to, and that was what drove him to live the rest of his life only for revenge/justice. Reading what you say about what the Mormon view is on Mohammed, it now seems to make sense

Besides the abduction and forced marriage, the pair later molest their landlady’s daughter in London. Her age is not given. but the implication is that she is underaged.
Another link of sorts to Jihad–Watson meets Holmes because he is looking for a place to stay in London after having served in the Anglo-Afghan War.
Doomer says
Hello gravenimage: That shows Joseph Smith was ignorant of what was written in the Quran. But Mormons can NOT retract it. Smith is their prophet.
Talking about retraction:
a) I had earlier said the Spanish Inquisition did NOT use the torture methods called:
Strapado, the rack and waterboarding. I was wrong,it was used. But NOT the following:
iron maiden, breaking bones with a hammer,
the St Catherine’s wheel, burning with Hot Iron.
b) Also I had said Women were Not subjected to torture, I was wrong again.
c) One thing I learned in addition: the Spanish Inquisition used torture in cases of HERESY, but never other cases ( bigamy, sodomy, witchcraft )
HOWEVER: contrary to popular ignorance, the WORST Inquisition was the PORTUGUESE one, of the 4 ( Roman Inquisition ( created 1542 ), Spanish, Medieval ).
a) Portugal tried to create an Inquisition in 1515 ( but the Pope was against it), then again in 1536 ( again the Pope was iffy )
and finally it became active in 1548. Until then, Portugal Never Had an Inquisition, not in the Middle Ages.
b) The Portuguese Inquisition ( like the Spanish one ) was100% under the Portuguese KING’s control. The Pope had no say.
c) Portugal had only 1 MILLION people from 1500-1650. SPAIN then had 8 MILLION ( 8 times more ).
1,200 people were killed by the Portuguese Inquisition ( for 1 million people)
At least 2,000 killed by the Spanish Inquisition ( for 8 million ).
d) The Portuguese Inquisition killed a Greater PERCENTAGE of people, if its Population had been 8 million, then the number of killed would have been
( 1,200 x 8 ) = 9,600 killed ( compared the 2,000 killed in Spain ).
Or if the population of Spain had been 1 MILLION , then the number of killed would have been 250.
e) Unknown to almost all except scholars, the Portuguese Inquisition, the worst one, was ABOLISHED by the POPE for a period of FIVE YEARS ( 1676-1681 )
due to the work of a Portuguese Jesuit priest ANTONIO VIEIRA ( 1608-1697),
born in Lisbon, and whose mother was Black. Vieira wrote a 200 page report to the Pope denouncing the Portuguese Inquisition, and he abolished it.
Vieira was also a missionary in Brazil, and became known as a defender of the Indians there, who were regularly made slaves.

Doomer,
The traditional churches, typically hooked to politics did many deplorable things not sanctioned by bible at all. Some noble opposed it and paid for it with their lives. e.g. Thomas More et al. They actually ended up on the wrong side of law (against king).
It is in the best interest of mankind to separate politics from religion. Jesus condemned tradition and hence attacked it rigorously.
gravenimage says
Doomer, I don’t think that Joseph Smith was ignorant of what Islam taught. Early on the LDS engaged in pedophilia, polygamy, and the killing of apostates–all things found in Islam.
Happily, mainstream Mormons have long since abandoned this barbarism.
Westman says
Knowing Mormon ideology somewhat maybe I can give this discussion some framework.
As the article suggests, both religions consider that someone speaks at divine direction to humans – Prophets. The great difference in their approach is that Islam believes in only one who can declare doctrine, Muhammad, while Mormonism believes in a continual succession of them.
Here is where Mormonism gets in difficulty: It considers all of its prophets to be infallible in matters of doctrine. Since a former First Presidency, a prophet and two councilors by definition, pronounced a very fallible description of Islam, going so far as to say Muhammad was raised up by God, the Mormons are stuck with it.
I noticed from the pamphlet agreement points, above, that they are bending over backwards to avoid the absolute stark difference about the divinity of Christ. Islam is expecting Christ, only a prophet, to aid in the destruction of Jews while Mormonism is built on the expectation that Jesus was the savior who paid for their sins. Islam believes Christ was never on the cross.
Going further, Momonism also supports a gathering of the Jews, Israel, as the final reconstitution of the old Zion. This would not be appreciated by Islam. Frankly, the Islamic and Mormon view of the “last days” is in such contrast that it would mean war in the “end times”. There is, possibly, one more horrible reason for the pamphlet – dropping support for Israel. Mormonism believes in an additional “last days” New Zion in the US, so it has an alternative to Jerusalem for itself.
It’s likely that the LDS Church is doing this PR to protect its many buildings in Europe and the US from vandalism and also keep its compliant members from putting themselves in danger. The LDS leadership has very highly secularly-educated men who know full well that Islam – not necessarily Muslims – is totally incompatible with Christianity.
You won’t hear about it, but some Mormons will leave the LDS church over these pamphlets, just as Catholics are leaving their church, because they perceive the leadership has lost touch with reality – and God.
For Islam, it just saw appeasement by the LDS Church. It will be back for more.
gravenimage says
Thanks, Westman. As for LDS motives here, I think they are apt in part to be the same sort of “political correctness” that affects more orthodox Christian denominations.

A couple or three things stand out to moi:
“be more kind ” This is a grammatical error, but anytime people *publish* something for others to read, which is supposed to be so very important, it is important to write correctly. The word “kinder” is an acceptable word.
Now:
“Such biases cause those who feel that way to overlook the kindness and goodness of the overwhelming majority of all Muslims,” he said.”
Has this guy ***met*** the “majority of” mozlums? I say, how could he come away believing that the “majority” show “kindness and goodness”?
In MN alone, the “majority” wish to impose their foul lawlessness on the rest of us; and this code of behavior says women may be beaten; little girls as young as infants can be raped, thieves can lose hand and foot, those who say some truth about the fake ‘prophet’ can be hanged, beheaded, burned to death, etc., and this “majority” was just in one State in the U.S. Count all of the nearly 2 billion molzums and ask each how he feels about the foul code they call “law.” Just consider one country: pakistan…How kind and good are the mozlums in that nation? They even sentence their own kind to death…by hanging…if a citizen draws their so-called ‘prophet.’ And we won’t even wish to think of what “kindness and goodness” they show to Christians there.
Kindness and goodness; sure, sure.
Now, for the final note from moi;
“Elder Bednar said the booklet was produced over several years with the help of Muslim imams.”
Was it Hamlet who said, “Ay, there’s the rub”?
The “help” of “imams.” Their mistake was in getting the “help” of known liars instead of asking people who know the Truth about islam and will gladly tell it, instead of mozlums who are all taught to lie, esp if it will further the spread of their foul, and evil, demands from satan.

Both Mormonism do have a number of things on common.
Both religions believe that their god had intentionally planed and started sin.
Both religions have a founder who claimed to be prophet. They were Muhammad and then Joseph Smith
Both religions have a founder/ prophet who said that he had an encounter with an angel.
Both religions had their founder prophet who was also a polygamist.
Both religions deny the Biblical doctrine of the existence of the Trinity of the Natural of God.
Both religions have a extra -Biblical book that in many part is in conflict with the Bible.
Both religions believe that the Bible through time was corrupted by evil men. Therefore when the Bible stands in contradiction to the Qu ‘ran with Muslims or the Book of Mormon the followers of that specific religion will always chose to believe that the Bible is than in error and not their extra-Biblical book with they feel is “divine.”
Both religions are based the feelings and emotion its followers faith and not history facts or science facts.
Both religions have an extra Biblical “divine” book , The Qu ‘ran or the Book of Mormon that contains contradictions in it.
Both religions have a history of its followers who have engaged in deadly violence. With Mormon history is that bloody violence with is called the “Mountain Meadows Massacre,” and at least once in the twentieth century a critic of Mormonism received death threats if he continued with his research. So he stopped.
As with Islam the its violent and deadly has already been well explained by Robert Spencer in his book HISTORY OF JIHAD.
It was even said that ,once, Joseph have even claimed that he is a type of a “Second Muhammad.”

In an Afghan restaurant in Houston, the Muslim owner from Afghanistan sat down with me, a nice gesture of hospitality indeed, and much appreciated. There were others in the restaurant in groups or as couples some Jews who enjoy Middle Eastern food. I was sitting alone. The previous day I had been there talking with two Keystone Project missionaries (headquartered in Keystone, SD) who had invited me to meet so they could explain their ministry where they live among the Muslims. The missionaries told me at the end of Ramadan the Muslims covered the walls and flooring with plastic in the apartment and slaughtered a lamb (I think it was) and the Muslims gave the missionaries a portion of the sacrifice. This is insider knowledge. In our discussion about the Gospel, I said all people are sinners and Jesus Christ died for your sins with full assurance of heaven, one died that many would be saved and live for eternity. He retorted that if he was to become a Christian, he thinks Mormonism is closest to Islam.
