The subtext is that the federal government needs massive new powers and much higher taxes, plus the end of the use of fossil fuels, in order to solve the climate “crisis” and prevent the arrival of these 100 million “climate refugees.” The statism may come, and the 100 million refugees won’t, and the Leftist authoritarians will declare that they staved off catastrophe.

The trouble is that the Lefty super-rich are very narcissistic and short-sighted. They want us to worry about the things they worry about. While the world is being destroying by fascist ideologies like Islam and tyrants like Putin, these morons are losing sleep over the Earth getting 0.5 degrees warmer.
I have a science degree and I accept the climate change research, MGW (man-caused global warming) is definitely a real problem, but it is blown out of proportion. It’s very easily manageable and can be fixed over a few decades. People around coastal regions are already being affected but they would need to just move further inland, until the problem can be solved. Plus the global warming helped to stave off an ice age.
Putin’s reckless behavior should’ve been a wake up call for the West. If a first world leader can go nuts and start killing thousands of his neighbors and destroy their cities, then threaten nuclear war, why should we expect terrorist nations like Iran to behave any better?
Iran should keep all free nation’s leaders terrified, because they are a very real danger and I’m now convinced they say what they mean. Once they have the nukes, they’ll bomb Israel, Europe and the US. We do we keep giving our enemies, esp. Islamic, the benefit of the doubt? How many 9/11’s will it take to wake them up?

Fitna: With respect, I don’t think man-made climate change is a real problem. It is a false problem, an almost no problem.
The oceans and seas of the world pump out 190-230 gigatons of CO2 every year. Mankind, from all his activities puts out around 20-30 gigatons of CO2 annually (the number of around 43 is inaccurate and tendentious). Yet mankind is destroying the environment? And yes, I know that that many bodies of water re-absorb much of the CO2 they emit (though not everywhere like the Baltic Sea) but they also re-absorb much of what mankind emits. Also, concluding that CO2 emissions are a problem is implicitly accepting that CO2 is a poison. It is not. This is just another misunderstanding of the facts.
Either man-made global warming is a total farce or almost a total farce. Please see my comment below for this and many other hysterias mankind has engaged in, including global cooling in the 1970’s.
Man-made global warming is an excuse to ensure greater centralization around the world, especially in the pathetic and modern apologetic West. It’s also about major money transfers. Hopefully you will see this and I write, once again, with respect for you and your take on things in your many posts here at JW.
Fitna says
Thanks Wellington, no offense taken and I value your posts/contributions as well on this site.
No doubt we can post links that support our differing positions, but it boils down to people who either trust or distrust the views of climate scientists and experts.
They’ve collected data over numerous fields, satellite maps, geological, ice-cores, etc, etc and about 97% of scientists from disparate fields, all reached the same conclusions.
I’m not one of these experts, I haven’t done the research, however I do trust what they are telling is true, the same way I’d trust my doctor if he told me I needed to have surgery for some reason.
Nobody argued against or doubted the experts or suspected a left wing conspiracy/agenda, when they told us that CFCs were causing massive holes in the ozone layer. We accepted the data without question and banned CFCs and we’re doing the same with freon gases.
But now some people are calling them liars/scammers when they same the same about CO2? Most of the experts who oppose their data are nearly always either outliers or being paid by the ‘Big Oil’ lobby who’d like to see their coal/gas plants continue to run.
One can also use their own intuition and realize if you cut down millions of trees, dump billions of tons of CO2 into the air, that were once locked up in hydrocarbons (oil/gas fuel), that it will cause a change to the environment.
There was a time when the planet was much hotter and the CO2 concentrations were higher. Over time, trees, plants, algae, rocks, and some contribute from water absorbed all that CO2 causing the Earth to cool…now we’re just doing the reverse, so logically it follows that the Earth will warm up again.
But if you’ve noticed in my post above, I’m far from an alarmist, I accept that the problem is real and we need alternate solutions, so for example, we can shut down dirty coal/gas plants replace them with hydrogen and nuclear plants or solar….this way people can find work in the new energy market.
Even if we ignore the CO2 aspect, there is no doubt that oil/gas is responsible for the most number of deaths due to cancer and other issues than any other energy industry, so they should be shut down on health basis alone. Let’s also not forget the brain damage caused by leaded fuel which was eventually banned.
I think we can easily transition over a few decades so that it’s easier on everyone. I own a gas based car, and would like to keep it running for another decade at least and then go electric. I just think we need a gradual move away from carbon-based fuels, we can also use ammonia as a replacement as well.
If 97% of scientists including organizations like NASA and NOAA all said global warming is not happening, it’s a hoax, etc, I’d take them at their word. I don’t understand why lay people (in general, not you personally), feel it’s politically driven and they dismiss the data because it doesn’t comport with their own personal biases?
That’s why science is so important, it just shows most of the time humans are wrong, this is why we do research to find out the truth and then deal with the facts as they are.
I don’t think our views are too far apart…it’s just that you don’t believe MGW is a problem at all, while I think it is but it is minor issue and can be resolved over a long period of time. The greatest threat imo is Islam and Muslim immigration into western countries, along with dangerous nations and individuals who are causing problems for others right now. Climate change would be way down on my list.
Wellington says
Yes, Fitna, the greatest threat we agree upon.
I do not accept your contention that the oil/gas industry is responsible for the greatest number of cancer deaths more than any other energy industry. How do you know this? What sources can you point to? How long have other energy sources been in existence to scientifically confirm the conclusion you proffered? Don’t you see both incompleteness and tendentiousness operating here?
As for the 97% figure, this is as bogus as that the 2016 Trump campaign, per the MSM by over 90%, colluding with Russia. A site like Climate Depot has knocked down many times this 97% figure (N.B., Climate Depot is despised by the Left as much as JW is and so it is dismissed as much as JW is—thus “approach” accordingly). Moreover, and as someone like Fred Singer, recently deceased and Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Virginia, along with many other “skeptical” scientists like Roy Spencer and Judith Curry, asserted, disagree with man-made climate change and you can expect no more funding at all—indeed, your very job might be at stake.
All of reason and sense should see that first the liberal arts were destroyed by Leftism and now both science and medicine have been severely harmed by Leftthink as well, most recently by all the Covid-19 nonsense passed off as science by a cretin like Anthony Fauci.
And I am not a conspiracy theorist (e.g., Oswald alone killed JFK). Indeed, I think most conspiracy theories are bunk, but the recent Covid-19 mistakes—unnecessary lockdowns, idiotic social distancing, moronic mask mandates, et al.—have only demonstrated that science and medicine have been corrupted as the liberal arts and overall education have been for many years now.
And even if so, per your contention about oil and gas, the rest of the energy industry, minus nuclear energy (and which the “Greenies” also excoriate) is paltry in its energy production and thus PRECISELY due to this paltriness could not provide enough evidence to determine that oil and gas are the greatest culprits in energy production respecting cancerous causes, never mind its inability to produce enough energy overall.
Meanwhile, despite oil and gas, Americans are living longer than ever before. Unless one is ready to argue that, minus gas and oil, Americans would be living even longer, an indeterminate variable to put it mildly, then I don’t see how you can attribute to oil and gas what you have. Speaking for myself, I attribute the number of cancer deaths by far to the fact that the human species, minus modern medicine and nutrition, would have around a 38-year old life span (N.B. even America in 1900, one of the most advanced countries on Earth at that time, had an average life-span of only 49 years).
One thing is certain and that is that America can produce oil and gas energy with the cleanest safeguards of any nation on Earth. Biden foolishly thwarting such production in America many times over only ensures that countries like Venezuela, Iran, Russia, OPEC, without such safeguards as America has, will only contribute to more pollution—if not cancer per your argument. So, even assuming what you say is correct about oil and gas energy re cancer, for the time being not utilizing it temporarily by America, which has an enormous capacity to do so, is not just negligent and stupid, but criminally negligent and stupid.
Thanks for your reply. I write what I have in a spirit of friendship and with no animus towards you personally. And I contend again that man-made climate change is the most extensive and fallacious of all environmental claims that a very silly West since the 1960s has produced.
I would close here by noting that I want clean waters and extensive forests but I think all these good things, as with longer life for humans, must be rooted in objectivity and not agenda-driven and spurious hypotheses—whether the hysteria about global cooling in the 1970’s or man-made global warming in our era.
Fitna says
Hi Wellington, the feeling is mutual and I appreciate that you took a moment to point that out. Likewise I know people can get fired up about certain topics, but ofc we understand that isn’t directed at each other…but people in the industry.
I just took for granted that people already knew that the oil/gas sector is the most polluting, and leading to the most deaths out of all the energy industries, which is why I didn’t bother to post a link, but I’ve included one now for your benefit below, there are many more like it:
https://ourworldindata.org/safest-sources-of-energy
Regarding the 97% claim, here is a source from NASA…if you don’t believe them, then there isn’t much else I can say to convince you:
https://climate.nasa.gov/faq/17/do-scientists-agree-on-climate-change/
On every topic there will be opposing/dissenting views. But when the vast majority of scientists from many different disciplines reach the same conclusion it’s an open/shut case.
I’m skeptical of claims that climate-deniers are bullied out of their funding if they don’t tow the line. I think it’s just one of the arguments thrown out to make it appear there is a cabal of scientists keeping the others down.
Not to mention the oil/gas industry has a lot of money to fund these experts themselves and they’ve done that already.
Scientists like to be proven wrong-that’s how science gets better over time. For example we used to believe the Earth was the center of the universe, but over time we learned that the Sun was at the center of the solar system and we’re in one galaxy of billions.
If climate-change deniers had valid arguments that proved them wrong, it would become the new scientific consensus.
I have also yet to hear any argument actually refuting the scientists’ data, which proves them wrong. I see arguments against Leftists and how they’re ruining Liberal arts, which is certainly debatable, but it still doesn’t advance the claim that the vast majority of scientists are wrong about MGW…it’s basically a non-sequitur.
This really isn’t a topic that interests me much and not something I care to waste my time on. My aim was to present the other side (as I’m sure most people here are climate-change skeptics) and let people do their own research and make up their minds.
Also if some people in the denier camp distrust mainstream science organizations like NASA and the NOAA, but they’ll believe the pseudo-science posted on blogs that some people created in their basements, then not much can be done to convince them otherwise.
Ofc I’m not putting you in that group of people, I know you’re a lot smarter than that and do your own research. Nonetheless, I will accept the claims of legit scientists and organizations like NASA over anyone else.
One last point, why wouldn’t we want to get away from the dirty oil/gas industry if we can find better alternatives, like hydrogen, nuclear, ammonia, solar, etc? The fossil fuel industry is finite, it’ll eventually run out, so we need an alternative even if MGW is “fake.”
I hope I didn’t misread you but you seemed to suggest that oil/gas is not harmful to humans, what about all the choking smog in major cities like Los Angeles and in China and India leading to respiration and other health issues for millions of people? I’m assuming you’re not actually denying that is also happening.
I’ll probably leave it at that since as aforementioned, this isn’t a topic that I care much about and once again while we may differ in our views it’s obviously nothing against you personally.

Fitna:
You might want to take a look at this data:
https://www.climatedepot.com/2022/01/21/climate-alarmists-conceal-global-temperature-anomaly-measurement-declines-despite-increasing-atmospheric-co2/
Sadly, I think NASA and NOAA have become politicized, just as Covid-19 has been horribly politicized—the lockdowns were unnecessary per a massive study by Johns Hopkins that just came out in January; the social distancing was bogus as shown by an extensive MIT study from last year; the masks were worthless, even harmful; and those suggesting that the origin of the virus came from the Wuhan laboratory were demonized for a long time for not accepting that it came from wet markets. Also, alternatives to vaccines were dismissed by the powers that be and which was a mistake
First the liberal arts, now science and medicine, have been subjected to political correctness. There is no such thing as consensus in science and as many scientists like Roy Spencer (meteorologist and author of “The Great Global Warming Blunder”) have tried to explain. Finally, all we have for for anthropogenic global warming are computed model projections and correlation studies, neither of which constitutes scientific evidence and each of which have a notorious track record for accuracy.
Thank you for the exchange. Take care.

The United States has made fantastic strides since the 1960s regarding unleaded gasoline and tailpipe emissions.
According to the EPA website:
“New passenger vehicles are 98-99% cleaner for most tailpipe pollutants compared to the 1960s.”
https://www.epa.gov/transportation-air-pollution-and-climate-change/accomplishments-and-success-air-pollution-transportation
If measures *hadn’t* been put in place since the 1960s, the air quality – particularly in major cities in the United States – would now be beyond horrific.
Yes, respiratory illnesses are still exacerbated during high smog days, but it is much harder to pin down specific cause and effect cancers related to the oil and gas industries. I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen, it’s just very difficult to quantify without controlled studies.
The United States should maintain a robust mixture of power options including nuclear, renewables, and – yes – fossil fuels. As nuclear and renewables become more prominent, the use of fossil fuels can be minimized.

Its typical lefty talk of raising taxes, end to fossil fuels, et al. Climate change can also come about as a “nuclear winter”. Putin’s reckless behavior and old KGB textbooks give him the tunnel vision that its still the cold war or even 1917. The invasion of Ukraine may go in unexpected ways. Optimistically, there are some indications that the Belarus military is not happy with being ordered to attack their brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Many Belarusians have relatives and family in Ukraine. If they refuse to bomb cities in Ukraine for the sake of Putin then Lukashenko will likely end up like Ceausescu – in front of a firing squad.

In the 1970’s the prediction then was that food production by the year 2000 would be catastrophic because, you see, we were entering into a major cooling down of the world. As an example, the April 28th, 1975 Newsweek cover article was entitled “The Cooling World.” Yep, mankind was in big trouble because we were facing a new ice age which would destroy so much, including harvests of sundry kinds. Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame was the voice of a documentary made in 1978 about how the terrible winters we were having were just more evidence of, yes, you guessed it, a new ice age.
Added to all this hysteria were moronic projections of oil production, for instance President Carter in 1977 averring that by 2000 the world was going to run out of oil (N.B., mankind as of 2022 hasn’t even tapped 20% of Earth’s oil production).
Then there were other hysterias like the Hellstrom Chronicle of 1971, a faux prediction that insects were gong to take over the Earth and mankind was doomed—sooner rather than later. This hysteria was followed by other environmental hysterias like alar poisoning the apples we eat (no truth in this though this hysteria ruined many apple growers), acid rain from factory outputs in America and Canada destroying fish in lakes and ponds most everywhere (turned out that it was PH changes in lake and pond bottoms which alter over thousands of years naturally and when this happens bodies of water become more acidic and kill lots of sea life). And on and one with this bogus crap, another being per incompetents back in the 1980s like Anthony Fauci (yeah, has this guy been around too long or what?) asserting that AIDS spreading into society at large was inevitable (never happened; AIDS remained overwhelmingly confined to two groups, i.e., intravenous drug users who shared dirty needles and gay men who has indiscriminate sex rather than just with one partner).
Oh yeah, eggs were bad for you too but now they’re good for you. Coconut oil was bad for you but now it’s great for you. Etc.
And finally, we come to the greatest scare of all—man-made climate change, which is, oh yes, inexorably heating up the world. This is either entirely wrong or so marginally correct that it amounts to being wrong.
The Earth a thousand years ago was warmer than it is now (this is not disputed, i.e., the medieval warming period that lasted from about 700-1300 AD, and thereafter the world cooled down until the late 19th century when it began to warm up again. Right now there are about 400 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere. Two hundred years ago it was around 300. During the medieval warming period when few SUVs and factories existed if I recollect accurately, it was around 600 parts per million. At times in Earth’s distant past, long before man ever arrived, it was as high as 8,000 parts per million. Also (a huge “also), CO2 is not a poison, rather it is food for plants and in higher levels of the atmosphere it actually has a cooling effect.
Which brings me back to the monumental phony, hypocrite and doofus who is John Kerry. He may actually be stupider than Biden and Harris. No one of sense should listen to this moron who flies around in his private jet (he owns two) across the world and burning much fuel all the while he lectures mankind upon the virtually non-existent farce which is man-made global warming. And another doofus, one Joe Biden by name, has bought into this pseudo-science and which “error” can have catastrophic effects upon Americans and all mankind.
America is now presently run by fools or worse. One knows this or should know it. So sick of this idiocy. By now, many more should be, but, let’s face it, too many people are sheep and easily fooled. The preservation of democracy and other wonderful things like common sense and scientific accuracy depend upon far more people not being fooled, the most recent example of which is the scandemic which has been Covid-19. Per studies by Johns Hopkins, MIT, et al. the lockdowns were never necessary, social distancing was a farce, as were the masks, and cretins like Fauci pushed vaccines alone (there’s a monetary element involved here no doubt) over alternatives to vaccines like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine.
Meanwhile, an idiot like John Kerry just keeps flapping his gums and way too many people listen to a fool like him. Again, time for a beer.
James Lincoln says
Wellington says,
“America is now presently run by fools or worse.”
I think “worse”.

Wellington says
“And they are evil and hate America.”
Agreed, James, and it goes back to what Obama said in late 2008 once elected over the RINO, the inept McCain, to wit, “We are on the eve of a fundamental transformation of America.”
Why would any person who is decent, informed and knowledgeable, none of which Obama is (and he orchestrated the destruction of the Trump Presidency even before its outset, more than any other single person I am convinced), want a “fundamental transformation” of the greatest and most successful experiment in human history? A betterment, yes. A fundamental transformation, absolutely not.
Only a fool or something worse than a fool (I know you’re with “worse” and I am inclined to such as well) would desire a “fundamental transformation” of America.. Obama did. The rot in America in our era starts with Obama. Biden is nothing more than a shill man for Obama’s 3rd term.
Obama, his manly wife too, have no regard for this country (e.g., a la Michelle, “America is a mean country”—must be really difficult to live on Martha’s Vineyard in a multi-million dollar mansion and yet contend that living in such a place is evidence of “meanness”—what a hypocrite and parasite she is).
A la Obama in 2008 about central Pennsylvania and where I come from, “they cling to their guns and their religion.” No, people like myself from central PA and loads of other places in America cling to the idea that America is, a la Abraham Lincoln, “the last best hope of mankind.” This escapes the Obamas.
As America goes, so goes the world. Obama and idiots like Biden, Harris, Blinken, Garland, Astin, Pelosi,, AOC, Omar—a long list—want America, effectively, to go to Hell. No, they should go to Hell.

John Kerry’s empty talking is just like those futurists who put their knowledge into the making of the movie entitled SOYLENT GREEN staring Charlton Heston.
In movie that came out and shown in the 1973 attempted to show how terrible things would be because of environmental control problems the distant future. This movie predicted that people would be existing in the conditions with little food that was awful and limited water and lacking much other basic needed things in the environmental catastrophe in the year 2022.
From the viewpoint of 1973 this current year of 2022 was a far- future. Of course the movie’s predictions came out to be wrong.
As we all know or should know no such environmental catastrophe happened. The only calamity of this year started in the 2021 in January 20th. in which Joe Biden took Office and the disaster was not about the environment issues but of social /political /economic /national and international disaster because Biden keep pushing and forcing his anti- free enterprise socialist policies as well as his other ant- American, anti- Israel pro -Islamic policies on the United States and the world.

On June first of the year 2017 on television on the Smithsonian channel was a program about the ecology and the dangers posed to it that would be harmful for all living things, including humans.
Likewise, in Summit on the subject of climate change held in Europe by the different countries in the ecology is, very obviously, viewed as a very important topic to many people.
Therefore, all of this is somewhat reminder that once when I was watching television a scientist was interviewed and he was, most likely, sincere when he said the in forty years unless drastic changes were enacted to stop the pollution of the environment living conditions on earth will be uninhabitable for life.
So environmental issues of this plaint are extremely important. The point is that interview with that scientist on television was in the year 1967.
Now it’s the year 2021 and thus more than fifty years sine he said “In forty years “there will be an awful environmental disaster. This should tell all thinking people something.
