British Conservative Party leadership contender Rishi Sunak has stated: “our members rightly put merit above everything else.” He was referring to the tactic of blaming “racism” for everything, including now his being now behind in the polls. This was refreshing. The word “merit” is increasingly missing from the equation and the default mode is charging “racism” whenever the subject of visible minorities come up.
These ideologues often subscribe to the soft bigotry of low expectations. For example, they favor lowering standards or advocate for the elimination altogether of standardized tests in order to help minorities get into colleges.
Whether or not one may approve of Rishi Sunak as a leader, it is admirable that he has called out the ludicrous manipulation of identity politics.
One reason, highlighted in the article below, that Sunak may be behind in the polls could be his “past friendliness towards Communist China, as well as his ties to the World Economic Forum (WEF).” He was an initial favorite to win.
“Asian Candidate Rejects Claims Racism Is Why He Is Losing Race for PM,” by Peter Caddle, Breitbart, July 31, 2022:
South Asian heritage candidate Rishi Sunak, currently losing the race to become Britain’s next Prime Minister, has rejected the idea that he is behind in the polls because of racism.
Despite claims being made to the contrary, Rishi Sunak has outright rejected any notion that he is currently losing the race to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom due to racism.
Sunak, who is of Indian heritage, was initially the favourite to win the race to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative (Tory) Party leader and, by extension, Prime Minister, but has since fallen behind his last rival standing, Liz Truss.
According to a report by The Telegraph, however, any notion that Sunak is currently losing the race due to some sort of racist disposition within the Conservative Party is not true.
Wealthy Tory donor Rami Ranger, an Indian-born member of the House of Lords, had claimed last week that Britain would be seen as racist should it reject Sunak in favour of Truss.
“I absolutely don’t think that’s a factor in anyone’s decision,” Sunak said, rejecting the notion that racism could be playing a factor in his lack of popularity.
“Our members rightly put merit above everything else,” he continued. “I’m sure when they are considering this question, they are just figuring out who is the best person to be Prime Minister.”
“Gender, ethnicity, and everything else will have nothing to do with it.”….

The UK is most certainly a very different country than the one I spent the first 21 years of my life in and I dont see it getting any better.. Ms Truss is much more worthy than this guy but that is not saying much.
I suggested years ago that the two men standing right beside BoJo was a Hindu and a muslim and one of them will kick the other in the nuts just to be the first colored PM of the once upon a time Great Britain and I must say I though Javid would be the guy to get the Keys to 10 Downing Street but he may just be waiting for the next PM to screw the country up even more then he will step in, after all the Mayor of the once upon a time great City of London is controlled by a silly wee awful muslim fellow who one of his first acts was to have the Tube Posters painted over as they showed a young white girl in a yellow Bikini advertising Sun Screen for the Summer months..Thats when I knew the county was seriously going down hill… But now I dont give a damn… Im an American.

Welcome.

Thanks for your ‘support’, mate. That sounds just like 1939 all over again. By the way, Sunak should be very well aware that British citizens aren’t complete idiots and can recognise not only a self-interested money-grubbing chancer when they see one, but also one who has no background in, nor loyalty to, the people of UK (reports say that he has a green card to live and work in the USA whenever he wants and rumour has it that his billionaire wife hasn’t even bothered to apply properly for UK residency). And in any case, why should any country have to accept a leader who cannot possibly represent the vast majority of its citizens? That’s something else that would have happened if things had gone wrong in 1939.

Sunak happens to be right in this case, whatever the reason for that assessment would be. It’s due to him being an elitist, as well as the reasons Andrew and Jayell mentioned above. I think it’s a shame that he ended up as one of the finalists: it should have been Kemi Badenoch and another of the more nationalistic candidates

I have to assume, from her (mis)spelling – favor/standardized/favorite – that Ms Williams is a Yank!
Hence, as far as I can see, her point of view is not exactly relevant to the British voter!

Canadian.

I thought that Canadians prefer British spellings to American. I recall visiting Toronto somewhere around 2007, and was surprised to see M&M’s being branded as ‘Smarties’ there – just like it is in the UK
Keith O says
Nah, smarties have been around a lot longer than M&Ms.
Look different, taste better and will melt in your hand.
Got both of the here in Oz.

John, your idea that Canadians have no right to write about British elections is mistaken. Lots of people from all over the world opine about American elections. I have no problem with this, whether I agree with their personal opinions or not.
By the way, I am American, and my English mother lived in Canada before she moved to the US.

My European family tells me that people there often go so far as to say they feel they should have a vote in US elections. Also that they don’t comprehend the US as well as they believe they do.

UK candidate for prime minister, Rishi Sunak, rejects idea he’s behind in polls because of racism
……………………………..
I know little about Rishi Sunak, but kudos to him here!

“Wealthy Tory donor Rami Ranger, an Indian-born member of the House of Lords, had claimed last week that Britain would be seen as racist should it reject Sunak in favour of Truss.”
——————————————————————————————————————–
If “racism” was a factor – how come Sunak made it all the way to the last two?
And how come “Indian-born” Rami Ranger is in the House of Lords if he’s beset by racists at every turn? At least we can all be sure that he got there on merit, and that there is no possible connection between the phrases “member of the House of Lords” and “wealthy Tory donor”…..
Ranger is evidently an unscrupulous chancer who has no qualms about trying to stir up racial divisions where they don’t exist, and has no business being in the House of Lords.
