The defense lawyer is banking on the general concern in Western countries for the well-being of the perpetrators, rather than for that of the victims, coming through for Habib Shamel in this case. And he is probably right.
“Afghan migrant accused of brutal murder in Ireland wanted bail as prison service may not allow him to observe Ramadan,” by Thomas Brooke, Remix News, April 11, 2023:
The defense lawyer of an Afghan migrant accused of stabbing a woman to death in Ireland last week has claimed his client should be given bail as the prison service may not adequately accommodate his religious needs during Ramadan.
Habib Shamel, a 26-year-old who arrived in Dublin from Afghanistan in October 2020 and claimed asylum, appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Saturday after being charged with the murder of Geila Ibram, a 27-year-old Romanian national.
The court heard how the victim’s mutilated body was found at an apartment building in the Irish city of Limerick on Tuesday. She died from multiple stab wounds during what police say was a “vicious and frenzied attack.”
A police investigation led to Shamel after messages on the victim’s phone revealed a “sexual exchange” had been arranged between the Afghan national and his victim on the day of the attack, and CCTV footage showed Shamel leaving the victim’s address shortly after arriving at around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
Shamel, who is understood to have injured himself in the attack, attended the local hospital before fleeing to Belfast in Northern Ireland later that day. He was eventually arrested by local police on Friday.
Shamel’s defense lawyer made a bail application to the court on the grounds that the accused, as a practicing Muslim, would not have his religious needs adequately catered for by the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
“He is very religious and is required to observe religious customs which occur at sunrise and sunset,” the lawyer told the court.
“He also has to fast during set parts of the day due to Ramadan and is also required to wash himself with water after each prayer session.
“We are concerned about the ability of the prison service to accommodate these religious observances,” they added….
Legal aid was granted for the defendant who is due to appear again before the court via video link on May 2.

If he is so devout I have to ask why did he leave Afghanistan? Of of course, access to women there is limited. I am convinced that is one of the main reasons, if not the main reason, these young men come to the West

don’t give him any water or food after the sun rises. When the sun goes down, throw some greasy fat globs into his cell and order him to bend over until his head touches the floor. When he’s in that position, tell him he can think what he wants, but he isn’t leaving.
They have gotten way too much, even after murdering innocent people. Enough is enough.
Johnny Cash sang, “You gotta’ be tough.” He served time and knew what he sang about.
the authorities should be “tough’ and stop giving in to evil.

somehistory,
Off-topic, but…
Back in the early 1980s, I took my parents to see Johnny Cash live. Great show, and he played all of his hits – including Ring of Fire!
After the show, Johnny headed back to his hotel room. As luck would have it, my folks were staying in the very same hotel. They just happened to walk by Johnny’s room, door left open, while he was celebrating his birthday. My dad waived to Johnny, saw the birthday cake, and wished Johnny a happy birthday.
Johnny invited my folks in and they all had a great time!

James, that sounds like a very wonderful experience. A good memory to carry along and pass on to your children, grandchildren, and people you may never see in person. thank you for sharing.

That reminds me of a old Jewish joke.
Young Beni started to work at the family factory, his father told him he must start at the bottom of the ladder,
first you will sweep the factory floor & then make tea for the workers & then start your apprenticeship for 7
years then when we die the business will be yours, OK?
One night he came home drunk, while his parents slept he kept on thinking about the long wait before he could own the business. He wanted the wealth & family fortune NOW !
So he decided to burn the family home while his parents slept.
Eventually the Police caught up with him.
He was found guilty by the judge, the judge said is there anything that you want to say before I pass the death sentence on you? I ask for clemency your honour seeing that I am an orphan.

I remember an account about a guy some years ago who murdered family members and then wanted to be let out of jail to go to the funeral.
mozlums….and some non….don’t seem to get the idea of what jail and prison are all about. It’s supposed to be punishment and a time of reflection on what wrongs were done so as not to repeat them.
The guilty seem to see it as just another wrinkle and if they press hard enough, they won’t have to endure any kind of suffering.

How many of HM Prisons throw open their doors at Easter? Part of a sentence of imprisonment is the deprivation of normal priviledges.

The only thing that is different about this murderer is that he is part of a death cult.
o special books, no banging his head on the floor five times a day, no special food, (ham sandwiches for every meal).
He is in jail for murder, his treatment should reflect that.

This Muslim obviously lives on another planet, the planet where “very religious” Muslims live. On that planet, you murder someone, no big deal, they do that all the time on planet islam, and you are then given bail. Why not, eh, it’s not a serious crime to murder someone on planet islam and happens every couple of minutes. Seriously, what a stunning idea. i have never heard of a person committing murder and then expecting to be allowed out on bail. I suppose that defence lawyers will try anything. That’s what their job seems to be all about..

tim, it’s kind of like monopoly. You “go directly to jail; do not pass go; do not collect 200dollars” unless you’re mozlum. All they need is a lawyer who knows how to throw the dice.
Btw, as I was attempting sleep last night, my mind, out of the blue, made up a song, that began “Down Under, down under….in a little shack on the beach.”
Hope your efforts were met with success.

Maybe you will start to get into songwriting again, somehistory. I went quite well yesterday. I was mostly polishing up a couple of songs I had already written, improving them a bit. I have a huge number of songs by now, some of them are not bad, but I have got only one contact in the music game, a friend from university from 50 years ago, who might play a couple of them with his band. But it is enjoyable anyway. There are also a huge number of songs by well known people that I like and enjoy playing and singing. It is the main thing I do these days and i haven’t grown bored with it so far.
somehistory says
I just might do that, Tim. I did write the words I could remember this morning and I had a fairly good tune with it. Thank you for the encouragement. I’m glad you had an enjoyable time working on your art.
I sing old songs of mine that i wrote many years ago…every now and then.
Listening to music is one of my favorite things to do.

Good for you, somehistory. I find trying to write good songs enjoyable and challenging and, as I said up above, I have not grown bored with it yet. Good luck with your efforts. I recall you saying that, years ago, you got ripped off by someone stealing your songs or not giving you credit for songs you had written. That’s a pretty low act.
