O Canada! Our home and native land!
#1. Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario
Project Title: “Reclaiming Nature Spaces: Structures of resistance to historical marginalization in outdoor culture.”
Application Deadline: January 15, 2024 (or until appropriate candidate is selected) [I apologize for not getting this notice to you in time for you to apply.]
Start Date: September 2024
Faculty: School of Kinesiology & Health Studies, Queen’s University
Project Description: In 2018, Latria Graham wrote for Outside magazine: “We might not be in national parks, but we’re at the lake, at private campgrounds close to home, and in state parks…I’m able to do everything my ancestors couldn’t – that’s the structure of my resistance.” Racialized people, women, the LGBTQ+ community, disabled people, and those who identify as fat have all created grassroots programs to support each other in a constellation of resistance against what outdoor culture has historically been: white, able-bodied, heterosexual, male. This project seeks to uplift and amplify these structures of resistance by learning from and with the very people who are doing what their ancestors could not do.
As part of a 5-year SSHRC Insight Grant, we are coordinating a multi-sited project with the following objectives: (1) amplify the work of traditionally marginalized groups who (re)claim space in outdoor culture, (2) challenge dominant narratives that reproduce the white heteropatriarchy and tend to recolonize outdoor culture, and (3) learn how these groups navigate, negotiate, resist, and interpret recreation on stolen land (or for Indigenous groups – colonized land) as a way forward. This project is for those who live their resistance in the outdoors by taking up space.
We are looking for a PhD student who:
- Identifies as BIPOC, non-gender conforming, LGTBQ+, fat, and/or disabled
- Preference for First Nations, Metis, or Inuit applicants
- Loves the outdoors OR would like to get into outdoor culture.
- Works well in a team environment.
- Ideally, has a background in kinesiology, health studies, Indigenous studies, cultural geography, sociology, or cultural studies or a similar degree program.
- Is looking to conduct a critical qualitative thesis project.
- Is able to live in Kingston, Ontario at least until coursework is complete.
Application Procedure
Prospective Doctoral applicants should email Dr. Courtney Szto (c.szto@queensu.ca) with the following items:
- Current curriculum vitae

- Unofficial transcripts
- 1 term paper with professor’s comments attached

I guess manufacturing and HiTech production plants in Canada are no longer hiring anyone specializing in kinesiology, health studies, Indigenous studies, cultural geography, sociology, or cultural studies.

Canadian government better invest in more helicopters because if you are going to encourage fatties to digest the wilderness areas they are going to be doing a lot more airlift rescues… preferably the Chinook type
tgusa says
“Canadian government better invest in more helicopters”
You opened up a can of worms. Search and Rescue is predominantly staffed by white males. So my suggestion is that white males decline to respond to any calls to rescue the above mentioned groups or people. They can use the reason that they didn’t want to upset any of the marginalized by injecting themselves in to the situation. The Canadian government better invest in more helicopters, back up helicopters, to go out and rescue the DEI rescuers who were first sent out to do the job.

And charge them by the pound, 40 rounds.

‘BIPOC’: ‘Black, Indigenous People Of Colour’ (yes, I had to look that up on internet). Obviously, this is just more racism, so why are white people villified as being intrinsically racist? I don’t follow. At all. These people are completely lost.
David Pimentel says
I just remember BIPOC as BiPolar Crazies. I think it more fitting.
Billy Corr says
Overweigh Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe lesbian fatties in wheelchairs will be competing strenuously for this delectable prize.
Make it a humiliating public contest and put it on TV.
David Pimentel says
“…put it on TV.”
Oh my God, no! No sane person wants to watch the cellulite of human refuse waddling and rolling in the mud. Let the mentally deranged and delusional fatties die in total obscurity without hope of any heavy airlift rescue.
tgusa says
Just give us the two minute update, without pictures. We will all sleep better at night, not knowing.
