The Czech Republic currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, and the tiny country has taken on Turkey in a rebuke over its longstanding and escalating threats to Greece. Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Greeks have a “vile character” and threatened to attack. Raising Ottoman history with Greece, Erdogan stated:
The Greeks were the pawns of other enemy forces of the time, but with faith and determination, the Turks managed to throw them into the sea.
Erdogan has stated repeatedly his goal for a revived Ottoman Empire. In June, he threatened Greece and warned it “to stay away from actions that will result in regret, just as they did a century ago.” Bullying Greece is routine for Turkey. Its provocation could have wider consequences. Days ago, on September 8:
Greece’s government has written to the country’s NATO and European Union partners and the head of the United Nations, asking them to formally condemn increasingly aggressive talk by officials in neighboring Turkey and suggesting that current bilateral tensions could escalate into a second open conflict on European soil.
And now EU’s current president, the Czech Republic, is rebuking Turkey for not only threatening Greece but also for claiming that “Kurdish terrorists have been training in Greece.” Two obsessions of the rabid Erdogan are Greece and the Kurds.
Turkey does not belong in NATO.
“Czech Republic condemns Erdogan’s remarks,” Ekathimerini, September 5, 2022:
The Czech Republic, which currently holds the European Union’s rotating presidency, has condemned recent remarks by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against Greece as “unacceptable.”
In a message on Twitter Saturday, the Czech Foreign Ministry said that the fostering of dialogue between the EU and Turkey is one of the “goals” of the Czech presidency. “Unacceptable threatening of EU member states, like the one addressed to Greece in President Erdogan’s recent public speech, is extremely unhelpful in this regard,” it added.
Speaking at an aerial technology festival in the Black Sea city of Samsun where Turkey showcased the prototype of an unmanned fighter jet Saturday, Erdogan threatened Greece to “come down suddenly one night.”
“Your occupying the islands does not bind us. When the time, the hour, comes, we will do what is necessary,” Erdogan said.
The Greek Foreign Ministry issued a statement Saturday saying it will not follow Turkey in its “outrageous daily slide” of statements and threats.
“We will inform our allies and partners on the content of the provocative statements … to make it clear who is setting dynamite to the cohesion of our alliance during a dangerous period,” it said….
